Blindspotting, which is in theaters now, follows the friends of Collin and Miles. Collin has only three days to go on his probation, and all he has to do is stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, his best friend Miles is a beacon for it. As Collin and Miles work together as movers, an event causes Collin to miss his mandatory curfew, and puts their friendship to an ultimate test. Blindspotting was written by Daveed Diggs and Rafel Casal, who star as Collin and Miles, respectively, and the film skillfully highlights numerous factors within friendships, race and income disparity, all set against the backdrop of Oakland. And Michael Yezerski was given the task of meshing it all through an eclectic score covering several genres and styles. For our exclusive interview, we discuss how Michael came into composing scores for film and TV, what it was like working on this film, and what he hopes to achieve next. A vigilante is any person who takes the law into their own hands to avenge a crime. When you mention the word, a few names immediately pop into mind: Batman, The Bride, Paul Kersey, The Equalizer. Film vaults are stock full of men and women who have been wronged for one reason or another, and chose to journey outside of the law to avenge those wrongs. Yet in the scheme of things, the facts are simple: these people are criminals. This week, we discuss what it is about vigilantes that excite audiences around the world. Why do we love what these people do? Is it right to applaud mass murderers? Are vigilantes fundamentally justified? It's an interesting topic about a group of people we often applaud, without really considering what it is we're applauding. As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year, as well as our review of The First Purge AND major Top Gun 2 news. Also, visit PodcastAwards.com and vote for The HO in People's Choice and TV/Film! First up, from Episode 301, it's the most emotional relationships on television. We discuss some of those relationships in TV that either broke or healed our aching hearts. Perhaps they filled our cups with joy, or maybe their angst flowed over into our own realities. It’s an intriguing conversation and there is no better time to discuss it. Next, we head to Episode 299 where we debated the best way to defeat an iconic movie hero! The villains rarely win, which means heroes are far more difficult to bring down. Therefore, on this episode we put ourselves firmly in the shoes of supervillains and megalomaniacs everywhere and determine exactly how we would bring down iconic movie heroes such as Iron Man, Batman, Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Luke Skywalker! Finally, we come to Episode 306 and when it's time for the hero to walk away. Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it’s just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Dark River stars Ruth Wilson as Alice, a woman who departed her family ranch in North Yorkshire many years ago. After earning a living as a contracted sheep-shearer, Alice returns home 15 years later upon hearing of the death of her father, Richard (Sean Bean). Her intention is not to mourn, but to claim the family land from her brother Joe (Mark Stanley). Refuting her assertion on the grounds that she abandoned her rights by leaving, Joe and Alice begin a tale of siblings separated by trauma and abuse, while delving into the psychological scars that are left, for everyone involved. Following her acclaimed project, The Sheltered Giant, director Clio Barnard stops by to discuss her latest. Dark River is a dour tale of a family plagued by the sins of their father, containing stellar performances from leads Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley, which are enhanced by Barnard’s atmospheric direction. Each landscape and background emerges as a deeper character in this sorrowful immersion into familial bonds and tragedy. For our exclusive interview, Clio Barnard discusses how Dark River came to be, assembling her top-notch cast of actors, and how her canvas is as much of a character as Alice is.
