Have you ever been so excited for a film, you can just about taste the franchise potential? Maybe you left the theater giddier than you expected, or heard word on the internet that there would definitely be more of the world you fell in love with…only to never have it materialize?

Our topic this week is Franchises That Never Happened. Shawn Fuller from Horribly Awkward joins us to discuss those films that seemed destined for sequels or continuations of some sort, only to fail to live up to expectations in some matter, and therefore a franchise was dead before it ever had a chance to live.

Later on in the show, we dive into everything Deadpool 2! What we loved, what we shook our heads at, and what we want to see next from the Merc with the Mouth. If you’re a Deadpool fan, you won’t want to miss this.

Also this week: Zombieland 2 is on the horizon, TV networks keep crushing our dreams, upcoming releases, and much more.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both here, so what better time to discuss the evolution of television families?

We all remember watching various families on our favorite TV shows, but why did we connect with some over others? What was it about this obviously fictional yet familial bond that, often times, felt more real than our own?

This week, we discuss how our beloved TV families have evolved over the years, from safe sitcom messages of the moment, to modern-day issues where it seems every family has a criminal mastermind behind it.

Also this week: Movie trailers and their lies, why do we still care about box office records, reviews of Tully and Anon, and much more.

With the largest opening in history, everyone is talking about Avengers: Infinity War. So we thought, as we celebrate 10 years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let’s go back to the beginning and look at how we got here.

This week, we discuss all of the films BEFORE Infinity War. We begin with Iron Man, and how Marvel gambled on a risky talent by the name of Robert Downey, Jr. While he is beloved worldwide for his portrayal of Tony Stark, as well as many other projects, he was very much an actor studios were leery of. By staking the entirety of their future on him, they hedged what turned out to be one of the greatest bets in cinematic history.

From here we move on to discuss everything else Marvel has attempted to do in the past 10 years. From their struggles – recasting Bruce Banner and War Machine – to their insane successes (what’s a Guardian of the Galaxy again?), we tackle it all on this extra-Marvelous episode that any film fan won’t want to miss.

AFTER this discussion, we take off the Spoiler Gauntlet and jump into Avengers: Infinity War! What we loved, what we loathed, favorite moments, personal experiences, and especially: what we thought of that ending! There is a lot to talk about this week, so take a listen.

This year, theaters are being treated to a monkey tearing down a skyscraper, an underwater hero who looks like a grunge rocker, and even Jason Statham quipping at a 70 foot Megalodon shark. In short, these films have plots that are insane.

On this podcast, we discuss the very concept of absurdity – can ANY plot work with the right cast and crew? Is it easier to accept a giant gorilla or robot trashing downtown Chicago if you have The Rock or Shia LaBeouf on hand? How crazy is TOO crazy?

Also this week: Summer movie going habits, when do we quit TV shows we love, are TV revivals going too far, reviews of Traffik and Rampage, upcoming releases, and much more.

Traffik follows Brea (Paula Patton), a journalist recently sidelined due to a distinct lack of immersion into her reporting. The timing could not be better when her boyfriend, John (Omar Epps), whisks her away for a lush romantic hideaway, tucked in the solace of the wilderness.

Happenstance meets tragic timing as Brea and John cross paths with a young woman seemingly pleading for help, and a conspicuous biker gang looking for trouble. After an intense encounter at a local gas station, the couple arrive at the picturesque retreat where a weekend of indulging awaits. An ill-timed visit from mutual friends (Laz Alonso and Roselyn Sanchez) proceeds a horrific development: Brea has found the desperate woman’s phone in her bag. As fate would have it, she has just arrived demanding the phone back. And she is not alone.

Traffik sets the board as any number of thrillers, as our heroes find themselves trapped in an isolated locale with a group of sadistic outlaws bent on their demise. What sets the film apart, are the very intense stakes at play for our characters amid the backdrop of sex trafficking. As tensions escalate, a tragic everyday truth emerges from beneath the fiction, and Traffik take an enthralling, yet decidedly pointed look at this modern true horror.

Traffik is pulse-pounding entertainment with an underlying message. And to elaborate on that message, as well as the film itself, is writer and director Deon Taylor. Responsible for the hit, Meet the Blacks, as well as its soon-to-be-released sequel, and the upcoming Dennis Quaid thriller, Motivated Seller, Taylor has been a filmmaker on the rise for several years. With Traffik, he veers into a complicated field of thriller meets education as our characters confront a very existential threat in today’s world: sex trafficking.

Enjoy our exclusive interview with writer and director Deon Taylor as he discusses his new film, Traffik, releasing nationwide on April 20, 2018.

40 years ago, television options were vastly different. Three channels, or maybe thirteen depending on where you great up, and not much else. If the President had a speech, your TV night was shot. As time rolled on, our entertainment options continued to gain traction, each decade taking another turn into more content. Once Netflix introduced streaming as a primary option, our choices exploded.

By the time 2018 is over, there will have been around 500 scripted television shows on the air. Between network TV, cable, premium, and now streaming, have we finally arrived at the place where we simply have TOO MUCH television?

Also this week: Westworld trolls its audience, The Rock opens up about his beef with Vin Diesel and we discuss how these dramatic tiffs influence us, Rogue One reshoots explained, reviews of A Quiet Place and Blockers, and much more.

Very few directors have shaped pop culture, but even fewer could argue against Steven Spielberg as leading that field. From his early days in the 70s, Spielberg has gifted us with so many timeless classics, it has become increasingly difficult to determine which one, of so many wonderful films, is truly THE BEST.

Well, this week, we’re going to decide! Eight Spielberg films will enter the ring, each with their own case for the greatest. Could it be Jurassic Park, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, or maybe even Raiders of the Lost Ark? After much debate, a final winner will emerge. This winner will be crowned The Greatest of All-Time! THIS is the Steven Spielberg Movie Battle Royale!

Also on this week’s show, we stay with the Spielberg theme by taking a look at his legacy, the variety in his filmography, and what he meant to us directly. We also dive into Ready Player One with our thoughts on his latest film, as well as offer a special announcement by show’s end. You won’t want to miss this magical episode of The Hollywood Outsider!

With two festivals in three weeks, we have watched a LOT of movies recently. So much that something dawned on us: in all of these journeys of the human spirit, why does the hero never walk away?

Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it’s just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Our topic this episode revolves around this very concept of when is it OK for a hero to walk away?

Also this week: Lord of the Rings TV is going to be very expensive, Steven Spielberg doesn’t believe Netflix should be eligible for Oscars, reviews of Pacific Rim: Uprising and Unsane, upcoming releases, and another wrong of You Just Don’t Get It.
