Dark River stars Ruth Wilson as Alice, a woman who departed her family ranch in North Yorkshire many years ago. After earning a living as a contracted sheep-shearer, Alice returns home 15 years later upon hearing of the death of her father, Richard (Sean Bean). Her intention is not to mourn, but to claim the family land from her brother Joe (Mark Stanley). Refuting her assertion on the grounds that she abandoned her rights by leaving, Joe and Alice begin a tale of siblings separated by trauma and abuse, while delving into the psychological scars that are left, for everyone involved.

Following her acclaimed project, The Sheltered Giant, director Clio Barnard stops by to discuss her latest. Dark River is a dour tale of a family plagued by the sins of their father, containing stellar performances from leads Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley, which are enhanced by Barnard’s atmospheric direction. Each landscape and background emerges as a deeper character in this sorrowful immersion into familial bonds and tragedy.

For our exclusive interview, Clio Barnard discusses how Dark River came to be, assembling her top-notch cast of actors, and how her canvas is as much of a character as Alice is.  This is one film and interview you won’t want to miss!

Dark River releases to theaters June 29, 2018.

If you remember back in the 80s and 90s, television began the trend of discussing “True Crime” events through dramatizations on shows like Unsolved Mysteries or as docuseries such as Cops. There have always been shows devoted to investigative reporting, yet it seems as though this was the moment when the genre of “True Crime” truly began to percolate.

The genre continued to explode, arriving at our current moment with juggernaut docuseries such as Making a Murderer and Evil Genius, and also scripted true crime shows revolving around the O.J. case and Versace. As both a writer and podcaster in the world of True Crime, Kevin Flynn of …These Are Their Stories and Crime Writers On drops by to discuss the explosion of “True Crime” over the last few years.

Also this week: reviews of Tag, Killing Eve and Flint Town; Doctor Sleep and Dolemite casting updates; S-Town launches into film; new releases, and much more.

Who doesn’t love a heist?!

Over the course of entertainment, one thing has been universally proven to be an absolute certainty: people wanna steal stuff! Ok, we know we shouldn’t, and most of respect the law and our personal freedom enough to never try. But movies and television afford us the opportunity to live vicariously through these outlaws as they proceed to get rich fast and easy.

This week, we dive into heist movies and why we love them. We also discuss why it is no one seems to feel too bad for the person actually being robbed, and conclude our thoughts by discussing the best and worst heists in film history.

Also this week: the fallout from Roseanne, Netflix is getting greedy, Top Gun 2 and Legally Blonde 3 gain traction, Jurassic Park turns 25, Walking Dead loses Rick Grimes, upcoming releases, and much more.

Hunting ISIS follows a group of veteran and civilian volunteers who smuggle themselves into Syria and Iraq to fight against ISIS alongside local militias. Through the eyes of American fighters embedded with the Kurdish YPG militia in Syria, and medics supporting a coalition of local forces in Iraq, Hunting ISIS follows these men as they begin the difficult push to retake ISIS’ capital cities. New episodes air Tuesdays at 10PM Eastern on the History Channel.

What is most interesting about Hunting ISIS is these brave men are not doing it for pay, they’re doing it because they believe in the cause. Each and every day, they wake up to face the possibility of death or imprisonment, and they continue forward. Not only does the series showcase the mission of these men, it also directs audiences to additional information about the conflict, and what it means for the world at large.

For this exclusive interview, host Aaron Peterson sits down with  director, Sebastiano Tomada and Deirio Films producer Christopher Leggett to discuss developing and filming Hunting ISIS, where the threat of war loomed over every frame.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both here, so what better time to discuss the evolution of television families?

We all remember watching various families on our favorite TV shows, but why did we connect with some over others? What was it about this obviously fictional yet familial bond that, often times, felt more real than our own?

This week, we discuss how our beloved TV families have evolved over the years, from safe sitcom messages of the moment, to modern-day issues where it seems every family has a criminal mastermind behind it.

Also this week: Movie trailers and their lies, why do we still care about box office records, reviews of Tully and Anon, and much more.
