On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, it's the Best of 2022 as we assemble our most popular topics of 2022 in ONE episode: Controversy, Multiverses, and 80s Movie Soundtracks! First up, we decided it was time to get a bit controversial and weigh in on a few of our unpopular opinions or theories in entertainment news. Is Wes Anderson vastly overrated? Should Star Wars have ended with Return of the Jedi? Is E.T. really an allegory for something deeper, perhaps a love story? All of these and more are discussed and probed as The Hollywood Outsider gets controversial. Then we’re taking a journey through the multiverse. Specifically, the concept of multiverses as a storytelling device. While many might think this starts and ends with Marvel’s recent slate of films including Spider-Man: No Way Home, in fact, multiverses have been around for decades in various forms. As this backdrop of storytelling explodes in popularity, we take a look at it and discuss if it has a long-term future in modern filmmaking. We conclude with our most popular topic of the year as we decided to look back at the original for inspiration and devote our topic to 80s movie soundtracks! Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, Purple Rain, The Blues Brothers, the list goes on and on and on. What was your favorite soundtrack from the 80s era? Discussed on this episode

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we debate timeless movies, iconic TV episodes, and debate villain team-ups in a Battle Royale! Our Movie Battle Royale takes on a new form as each host forms a Suicide Squad of their own, 4 villains teaming up to defeat Thanos. Which combination wins the battle? Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park. These are some of the first films you think of when you debate movies that have stood up to the trials of time. On this segment, we are discussing timeless movies. Those films that still hold up decades later, against modern effects and scrutiny. These aren’t based on greatness or classic status, these are decided on by their ability to almost look and feel the same to you now as they did when you first saw them. Iconic is typically defined as widely recognized and well-established. Iconic episodes of television though are far and few between, because typically a series can only have one that would be called iconic, and how few episodes of any TV show are actually iconic? On this segment we discuss the very nature of reaching iconic status, as well as what we would define as iconic television episodes. Sure, the usual suspects arrive in the form of Lost or Game of Thrones, but a few surprises await as well during an engaging discussion on a topic most of us know far more about than we realize. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we take a look at the world of movie and TV heroes. But instead of daring acts of valor, we discuss those heroes who truly aren't very heroic. We're not talking anti-heroes either. Maybe these alleged good guys didn't actually save anyone, or maybe they caused more damage than the villain, or maybe they were constantly bailed out by their friends at Hogwarts. Luke Skywalker, Frodo, Glenda the Good Witch, Rose, and the names keep coming. Whatever the case, we taking a sharp look at whether many of these protagonists deserve the title of "hero". Also on this episode, we are discussing why we need so many thumbs for Netflix, how far deepfake technology has come, reviews of DUAL, All the Old Knives and Ambulance, and much more. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're taking a journey through the multiverse. Specifically, the concept of multiverses as a storytelling device. While many might think this starts and ends with Marvel's recent slate of films including Spider-Man: No Way Home, in fact, multiverses have been around for decades in various forms. As this backdrop of storytelling explodes in popularity, we take a look at it and discuss if it has a long-term future in modern filmmaking. Also on this week's episode, we discuss Bruce Willis' recent decision to retire from acting to focus on his personal health. We discuss his iconic career, his evolution from TV star to movie star, and what his roles have meant to us. We follow this discussion with an interview from director Matt Eskandari who has worked with Willis recently. As well as reviews of Everything Everywhere All at Once and Morbius, and the latest on the slap heard round the world between Will Smith and Chris Rock.

Cliffhangers, Reviving Characters From the Dead, Unlikeable Yet Loveable Characters, and Weird Casting Choices
On this compilation episode, we discuss bringing characters back from the dead, cliffhangers in movies, unlikeable yet loveable characters, and weird casting choices. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we’re talking about several topics, the first of which is bringing characters back from the dead. And we mean actually, truly, verified dead characters on a TV series or a movie that later comes back from the dead. Is this cliche? Is it a copout? Does this concept EVER work without lowering the stakes in whatever the property is?Then after a short discussion on cliffhangers in movies, we move on to ROYYYYY KEEENNNNNNNT! The world has become enamored with Ted Lasso’s Roy Kent as have we, and this has inspired us to discuss unlikeable yet loveable TV characters. Perhaps it’s only in your eyes or maybe the writing or performance evolved into a character with a deeper understanding. Either way, our topic this week revolves around these fascinating characters on television who ultimately turned your frown upside down. Then we move on to some of the weird casting choices to come out of Hollywood – the good and the bad – like a 30 year old playing teenager Evan Hansen, Tom Cruise playing the 6′ 5″ Jack Reacher, Gary Oldman playing a dwarf in Tiptoes, or Miles Teller playing pretty much anyone. Weird is a relative term, and we debate these odd choices, for better and worse. Discussed on this episode

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, it's time to discuss DC's latest reboot, The Batman! With echoes in tone of films like Klute, The French Connection, Seven, and Zodiac, The Batman stars Robert Battinson – sorry, Pattinson – as billionaire Bruce Wayne. You might have heard that his parents died when he was a child, and his whole life has been consumed with grief and anger over their loss, causing him to don a cape and cowl and torture criminals on the streets as The Batman. The Batman begins in Year 2 of his crusade and shades of The Long Halloween take root as the mayor is murdered on Halloween. The Batman has been beating low level thugs and now a series of murders are riddled with clues left specifically for him. Who is this masked man murdering all of these elitist “white priviledged assholes”? Well, it’s the Riddler, and he’s a creepy unknown who wants Bruce on his side for some reason, and now The Batman must team up with Commissioner Gordon to track him down before he kills again. And also, uncover the secret as to why… We end the podcast by revisiting a conversation on vigilantes, and why we love them. Discussed on this episode

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we change course and dedicate the episode a simple topic: "Hollywood, let's just stop..." Insert your own conclusion to that statement. What do YOU think Hollywood and entertainment should just STOP doing?

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we revisit a topic that simply fails to change much, video game movies. It's been decades since Hollywood began cranking out video game adaptations, but unlike other mediums, movies cannot seem to find that sweet spot that appeals to both gamers and film fans alike. It's rare that Hollywood even approaches a good movie with these properties. So this episode we discuss this struggle, and answer the most important question: why can't video game movies get it right?! Also this week: movie and TV news including a discussion on the evolution of binge watching and coming back to weekly releases, intellectual properties taking over content, as well as spoiler-free reviews of Uncharted and Dog. Then we are joined by the Executive Director of the Beloit International Film Festival to discuss the event, which runs from Feb 25 - Mar 6, 2022. Tom Holland returns for the conclusion of his trilogy which began with Spider-Man: Homecoming as director Jon Watts pulls out all of the stops. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're discussing the 20th anniversary of the beloved cinematic nerd achievement Lord of the Rings, the beginning of one of the ballsiest choices Hollywood has ever made: filming a fantasy trilogy, all at once, when fantasy like this was not popular at all. And make no mistake, you can thank this series for Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, Witcher, and numerous other fantasy shows getting greenlit. It showed there was an audience for it as long as you did it right. For millions, it's Wes Craven's SCREAM! Take a listen to this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast as we discuss the 25th anniversary of this classic, and our thoughts on the upcoming 2022 film. On December 20, 1996, director Wes Craven re-invented the slasher-horror genre with this funny, clever and scary film that spawned a legacy of its own. After a series of mysterious deaths, an offbeat group of scary movie fans become the target of a masked killer. As the body count begins, it's clear that the rules must be followed, and everyone's a suspect. Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore star in this original film that launched a franchise and, in many ways, saved horror.

Twenty years later and it feels like there couldn't have possibly been a time when Harry Potter didn't exist. The books, the core films, the spin-offs, the actors, the score, the endless consumerism - there is hardly anything the Potter-verse hasn't touched in some way or another. More than anything, though, the impact on the lives of children and adults alike. The youths who read the books and could fantasize about receiving their own letter; the children who were the same age as the characters and actors and literally grew up together; and the adults and parents who watched their children and their children's children grow up and explore the world of magic. Regardless if you adore or couldn't care less of the franchise, it's impossible to deny that it is truly remarkable. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss all things Harry Potter, including the books' translation to film, the impeccable casting for the films, our preferred Dumbledore, how/if J.K. Rowling's recent controversy has impacted our enjoyment, and acknowledgment that it's our (Americans) fault we can't have anything nice. |

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss the concept of movie stingers, those post-credits scenes so many Marvel films love to throw at us these days. A stinger is typically short clip that appears after all or some of the closing credits have rolled and sometimes a movie has seemingly ended. But is this trend getting a bit tired? Or has it become a movie necessity? Also, AfterCredits.com is a great tool for determining which films have stingers attached, per Troy's recommendation in this episode. Also this week: our news round-up touches on the loss of Dean Stockwell and Disney's IMAX-enhanced Marvel films for Disney+, reviews of The Feast and Clerk, and then a lengthy discussion on Marvel's latest blockbuster, Eternals. It’s time to put up or shut up, because on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we are each going to build our own perfect holiday movie! And yes, these stories are copyrighted. Also this week: we discuss the Boondock Saints III news, spoiler-free reviews of Violet, Ida Red, Last Night in Soho, The Beta Test, Antlers, upcoming releases including the Eternals, and movie/tv recommendations from the hosts.

On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, Dune and the concept of cliffhangers in film. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is truly only half of the story as the film builds right up to an understated cliffhanger, therefore the majority of this film is setting up the characters and the story for what’s to come. Villeneuve has a plethora of talent to pluck from, as there is not an actor present not bringing their A-game to the occasionally confounding vernacular inherent to this world. Visually stunning, but is it a great film? Take a listen as we dissect the overall film, as well as debate the concept of ending your film on a bonafide cliffhanger. Also this week: we discuss the recent walkout in response to Dave Chappelle's Netflix special, The Closer, and the absolute tragedy that took place on the set of the independent film, RUST, where a senseless accident claimed the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Great Movie Plots Gone Wrong, Serial Killers, Defunct TV Shows Needing A Movie Reboot, The Tomorrow War
On this compilation episode, we discuss great movie plots gone wrong, our fascination with serial killers, defunct TV shows in need of a movie reboot, and Amazon Prime's The Tomorrow War.First up are those defunct TV shows that are completely off-air and that we believe deserve a movie reboot. We’ve all seen this done a bazillion times – Baywatch, Spencer Confidential, countless others – what is it about long dead television shows that make feature films so appealing to reboot them? After our review of Chris Pratt's The Tomorrow War, we discuss our fascination with serial killers. True crime has exploded over the last few years between podcasts, Netflix series and documentaries, and films, but the societal obsession has always been there. What is it that makes us all so intrigued? Do we have a different response to fictional killers than we do to documentaries on real killers? Finally, we debate great movie plots that went wrong. These are ones we thought were great in concept, but the execution – whether it be in production or performances – made us a sad panda. We’re looking at you, Star Wars prequels, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Lady in the Water to name a few. Discussed on this episode
