Who is your favorite lone wolf assassin in film and why do we love these movies so much?Lone wolf assassin movies a.k.a. movies where one person (man or woman) is either exacting revenge by slaughtering evil doers in fantastic ways, or just does it because they are damn good at it. John Wick is the most tossed about example but really think on this: for examples, the 80s had Commando, Chuck Norris’ An Eye for an Eye, the 70s had Death Wish, also films like The Bourne Identity, Kill Bill, Peppermint, The Punisher, Leon The Professional, Wanted, etc. It’s a genre that has been around for decades, yet seems to always disappear for a year or two until someone – most recently John Wick and Nobody – brings it storming back to popularity. The South by Southwest Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Every year, thousands of fans arrive in downtown Austin, TX to partake in a couple of weeks of great music, technology, and film. For this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we take you along for our annual deep dive into the heart of the film festival portion, and even further into the films themselves. Over the course of several days, the 2021 SXSW Film Festival screened over numerous features, many from first-time filmmakers (consisting of World Premieres, North American Premieres, and US Premieres), shorts, virtual reality exhibits, title design, and other works. These films were selected from thousands of overall submissions, and – while we can’t see them all – we have a nice sample to share with you of what came out of this stellar lineup of independent films. With Zack Snyder's Justice League released to the world, what do you think of his vision?Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. In HBO Max's Zack Snyder's Justice League, Darkseid arrives, Steppenwolf has a whole new look, Cyborg and Flash both have an actual backstory, and we’ve got over 3 hours of new-to-us material. This is not 2017’s JOSStice League, the infamously Frankenstein'd version of Justice League that director Joss Whedon put together. Where do you stand on "cancel culture" in entertainment? Is it holding celebrities accountable or are we too quick to jump?On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're talking about the daily news section called "cancel culture" and whether entertainment has a cancel culture or image problem. To define cancel culture, cancel culture (or call-out culture) is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles - either online on social media, in the real world, or both. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "canceled." Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. For those at the receiving end of cancel culture, the consequences can lead to loss of reputation and income that can be hard to recover from. Cobra Kai is back at the dojo kicking off season 3 following the “karate riots” at the end of the last season. Immediately, we get to observe the effects of the fight on Sam, who is basically now mortal enemies with Tory, and is suffering from PTSD. Daniel and Johnny are also in emotional turmoil, as they struggle with guilt, anger, and accountability for the fight. Kreese rebuilds Cobra Kai in his own image, poisoning his students in the process. While Robby is running from law enforcement for the kick to Miguel, a horribly injured Miguel fights for his life in the ICU. Consequences abound this season, Daniel makes a visit to his past via Okinawa, Johnny faces his own struggles with his son Robby and Miguel's injuries, and loyalties are tested throughout the season with both the younger and older characters of the show. In TENET, The Protagonist (John David Washington) is an agent who takes a cyanide capsule – which turns out to be a ruse – after an operation goes south, rather than turn on his government, which wins him favor with a secret organization in need of such fierce loyalty. This is where The Protagonist learns about inversion; the ability to essentially rewind time and possibly save the world from destroying itself in the past, or from the future to the past, or is the past the future? The concept is fascinating and hilariously convoluted – brace yourself for exposition as clear as a Yoda TED Talk – yet ultimately clicks as we wade into the final act. Inversion is time travel for people who love to pine on about the complications and philosophies of the topic. Like Christopher Nolan, we imagine. Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 7th Annual Holiday Special! It all started with a random idea, we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we do a little something different, so this year we’re celebrating going into our 10th year as a podcast by looking back at previous holiday specials and assembling some of the best moments from every host - Aaron, John, Amanda, Brian, Scott, and Justin - for the most fantastic holiday special ever! What do you think is the future of movie theaters?Originally, HBO Max made a deal with a handful of theater chains to simultaneously release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max the same day and date. Both parties agreed to it, because of the circumstances of theaters currently during the Covid-19 crisis. Last week, Warner Brothers dropped the further news that they will be debuting ALL of their 2021 releases – Matrix 4, Conjuring 3, Godzilla vs. Kong, In the Heights, and more – on HBO Max and in theaters on the exact same day and date. Thing is, theaters haven’t – as of this recording – agreed to that. Also, the creatives and talent behind those films had no idea it was coming either. Christopher Nolan even lashed out and called HBO Max "the worst streaming service". Now, currently HBO Max is stating this is only for one year due to COVID, but the internet is already reacting as if this is the future of movies. FATMAN, newly available on demand, is a modern, gritty, almost realistic take on the Santa Claus legend, starring Mel Gibson and Marianne Jean-Babtiste as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. While Santa - aka Fatman - deals with shrinking sales due to a noticeable lack of NICE in the world, little Billy (Chance Hurstfield) is obsessed with getting everything he wants. When Santa gives Billy a lump of coal because he’s been extremely naughty this year, Billy decides to hire Walton Goggins’ contract killer Skinny Man to hunt down the Fatman and take him out, once and for all. It's darkly comedic, twistedly violent, extremely clever holiday thriller that features strong performances across the board. A typecast actor is one who becomes strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters having the same traits or coming from the same social or ethnic groups. For example, if you think of Jason Statham's acting career, you'd probably think of him as the straight-faced action-movie killer. However, he took a chance in the movie Spy where he played a humorous character. Adam Sandler is famously known for his man-child characters, yet with Uncut Gems, he proved yet again there are many layers wrapped into the Sandman. Who is your favorite President in movies or TV?On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we first take a look back at the legacy of Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Born on August 25,1930, Connery began acting in the '50s before he first launched to fame as James Bond in Dr. No. He went on to break away from Bond in films like Marnie and Robin and Marian, and then did a lot of ensembles and supporting roles in the 70s and 80s including The Untouchables (which is won an Oscar for), Highlander, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. His career continued a box office resurgence as films like The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, Dragonheart, and Entrapment kept him on the A-list until he retired after A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. He also won American Film Institutes Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. We then shift over to Presidents in Entertainment. Whether it be from film or television, the greatest presidents in entertainment are - just like with any election - subject to personal tastes. Independence Day, 24, The West Wing, entertainment is full of fantastic representations of the United States Presidency. We discuss what constitutes being "presidential", how much movies and TV influences are opinion on actual presidents, and even play a few games with both real and fictional presidents. Flavio Alves, the director and co-writer of the new film The Garden Left Behind, discusses his career, his film revolving around the trans experience, and much more on our latest exclusive interview. The Garden Left Behind is available in virtual theatrical locations now, and on VOD September 8th. Carlie Guevara stars as Tina, an undocumented trans woman living with her grandmother, Eliana in Queens. Eliana has brought Tina to America from Mexico, and though she both sternly and affectionately still refers to her grandchild by her birth name of Antonio, Tina’s relationship with her grandmother is one of unwavering love and devotion. Tina is in the process of several major life decisions. She’s trying to juggle her shaky relationship with Jason, her job driving New York passengers to their next stop, and her burgeoning career as an activist following an assault on another trans woman; Tina is also confronting the very real possibility of gender reassignment. To fully become the person she knows she should be will take an enormous amount of support, which she has in her best friend Carol (Tamara M. Williams), as well as a hefty amount of cash, which she has far less of. The film revolves around Tina’s journey, and it’s equal parts sad and beautiful. For this special episode, we are speaking with Ralph D’Amato, the producer and visionary for the documentary, Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story. Pretending I’m a Superman is a documentary that tells the story of how skateboarding became a part of the mainstream by focusing on the success of the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” video game franchise. The film stars pro skateboarding legends Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Chad Muska and Jamie Thomas. Ralph started in production on the billion-dollar Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game franchise where he was a producer on the first 8 titles. During that time, his production tasks included character art, animation, legal, licensing and interacting with the skaters and their sponsors. His responsibility also included the soundtracks for the video games, one of which won the first ever MTV Video Music Award for Video Game Soundtrack, Tony Hawk’s Underground. After departing the video game franchise, Ralph went on to become Director of New Media for Tony Hawk Incorporated. In 2017, Ralph founded an independent film production studio called D’Amato Productions, where he produced his first full-length, feature documentary – Pretending I'm a Superman. Ralph took some time to call in and discuss his career, why he wanted to tell the Tony Hawk story, and how this project came to be. Take a listen!

When a witness to an attack arrives in James Costa (Ethan Hawke), Illeana finds herself caught up in a desperate game to stop the killer before he claims yet another victim. Or herself. A serial killer thriller that has grown in cult status over the years, we've been fans of the film for some time. Therefore it was perfect for this selection of a film critics might not appreciate, but we find to be a pretty good movie. How Do You Feel About "Inspired By" In Film?On this episode, we're discussing where we stand on "inspired by". Coming out this past week was Wendy, a film about a group of kids lost on an island that is “inspired by Peter Pan”. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and 1917 were inspired by true events, namely the Manson Murders and World War 1. Just Mercy was a film that recently was inspired by very true events. So many films use this as a way to sell their movies, even when they play fast and loose with the original details they claim inspired them. We have numerous serious films that are “inspired by” works of fiction, as well as real life people and cases, but veer pretty far from the source material. So where do we stand on this: Necessary marketing tactic, or cheap gimmick to garner legitimacy, or something else? As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from last year: Classic Films, Childhood Heroes Brought Back To Life, and the Most Quotable Movies. The HO will return with our 2020 Movie Release Extravaganza on January 15, 2020! First up, from Episode 361: We discuss the concept of classic films and what defines them for us. We also debate what we miss about these films, and especially what we don’t. Next, we head to Episode 363: We take a look at those moments when our own childhood heroes are sprung back to life. Not all of these resurgences went as smoothly as we would have hoped, yet that does not take away from the excitement we felt as we all approached opening day or the first time a new episode hit the airwaves. Our favorites, the ones that crushed our dreams, and maybe even one or two that had us questioning our own childhood memories. J.J. Abrams returns to Star Wars with The Rise of Skywalker, and to end a 9-film saga. For this go round, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) have been tasked with locating a hidden planet that contains the key to bringing down the entirety of The First Order, now led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Still conflicted with his connection to Rey, Kylo – aka Ben Solo – struggles and pontificates on his place in this world, as Rey continues to force forward towards completing her journey and saving the galaxy. And yes, Rey and Kylo continue their back-and-forth psychic shenanigans about who is worth redemption, and who is truly pulling whom into the Dark Side. On this episode, we dive head-first into the final film in this epic series (for now), and specifically what we loved and loathed about this latest attempt to satisfy fans worldwide. Is it too safe? Classics like The Matrix, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Sixth Sense, The Mummy, The Blair Witch Project, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me hit theaters. Not to be outdone, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Angel, ER, Friends, Touched By An Angel, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit took over our television sets. It was a prime time for entertainment. Much has changed since then, but what is even more interesting is how much remains the same.
