What is the most iconic episode of television?Iconic is typically defined as widely recognized and well-established. Iconic episodes of television though are far and few between, because typically a series can only have one that would be called iconic, and how few episodes of any TV show are actually iconic? On this episode we discuss the very nature of reaching iconic status, as well as what episodes we would define as iconic. Sure, the usual suspects arrive in the form of Lost or Game of Thrones, but a few surprises await as well during an engaging discussion on a topic most of us know far more about than we realize. Also on this episode: our news roundup including a Gundam Netflix adaptation, the closing of the Arclight Theater, and the Oscars giving essential worker waivers to their guests, spoiler-free review of Beast Beast, our weekly streaming recommendation, and much more. Who is your favorite lone wolf assassin in film and why do we love these movies so much?Lone wolf assassin movies a.k.a. movies where one person (man or woman) is either exacting revenge by slaughtering evil doers in fantastic ways, or just does it because they are damn good at it. John Wick is the most tossed about example but really think on this: for examples, the 80s had Commando, Chuck Norris’ An Eye for an Eye, the 70s had Death Wish, also films like The Bourne Identity, Kill Bill, Peppermint, The Punisher, Leon The Professional, Wanted, etc. It’s a genre that has been around for decades, yet seems to always disappear for a year or two until someone – most recently John Wick and Nobody – brings it storming back to popularity. So what is it about someone murdering scores of thugs all on their own that keeps audiences coming back to the fold over and over again? Also on this episode: our news roundup including Death on the Nile is relocated to 2022 and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard takes on Thundercats, spoiler-free reviews of Nobody and Invincible, our weekly streaming recommendation, and much more. With Zack Snyder's Justice League released to the world, what do you think of his vision?Determined to ensure Superman's ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne aligns forces with Diana Prince with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. In HBO Max's Zack Snyder's Justice League, Darkseid arrives, Steppenwolf has a whole new look, Cyborg and Flash both have an actual backstory, and we’ve got over 3 hours of new-to-us material. This is not 2017’s JOSStice League, the infamously Frankenstein'd version of Justice League that director Joss Whedon put together. This is essentially a brand new film, as Zack Snyder had enough material already for two movies on hand. At 4 hours, 3 f-bombs, an R rating stuffed with blood and decapitated heads; we have arrived at a much different destination than we took several years ago. For this episode, we’re discussing one of the most talked about movies of the year: Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and the return of Cyborg: The Age of Heroes has arrived! Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

Great movie plots gone wrong: those films with such a fantastic concept flawed executionOn this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're talking about great movie plots that went wrong. These are ones we thought were great in concept, but the execution - whether it be in production or performances - made us a sad panda. We discuss our favorite examples of a wasted opportunity, before debating several listener choices. Where do you stand on "cancel culture" in entertainment? Is it holding celebrities accountable or are we too quick to jump?On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're talking about the daily news section called "cancel culture" and whether entertainment has a cancel culture or image problem. To define cancel culture, cancel culture (or call-out culture) is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles - either online on social media, in the real world, or both. Those who are subject to this ostracism are said to be "canceled." Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. Cancel culture is generally discussed as being performed on social media in the form of group shaming. For those at the receiving end of cancel culture, the consequences can lead to loss of reputation and income that can be hard to recover from. Gina Carano, Joss Whedon, Armie Hammer, Kevin Spacey and many more are discussed as we debate whether or not Hollywood, in fact, has a cancel culture problem. Also on this episode: spoiler-free reviews of Silk Road, Tentacles, Judas and the Black Messiah, and To All the Boys: Always and Forever, and upcoming releases. Lastly, our "CANCEL IT!" segment has returned - fitting for this episode - where each host offers an old cliché in movies or TV that REALLY needs to be canceled (in a fun way). On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we revisit 2020 as we present the 2021 Awards for the best we witnessed in film and television over the past year. From the continued explosion of quality content on TV and streaming services (Mandalorian, Ozark, The Boys, Schitt's Creek), to the implosion of mediocrity scattered about, to an overload of film greatness (Tenet, Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7) both at home and in theaters (though this year home theaters became an absolute must-have) – THESE are the only podcast awards you need to listen to! * Be wary of potential mild spoilers for 2020 films and TV series Discussed on this episode

Immediately, we get to observe the effects of the fight on Sam, who is basically now mortal enemies with Tory, and is suffering from PTSD. While Robby is running from law enforcement for the kick to Miguel, a horribly injured Miguel fights for his life in the ICU. Consequences abound this season, Daniel makes a visit to his past via Okinawa, Johnny faces his own struggles with his son Robby and Miguel's injuries, and loyalties are tested throughout the season with both the younger and older characters of the show. In TENET, The Protagonist (John David Washington) is an agent who takes a cyanide capsule – which turns out to be a ruse – after an operation goes south, rather than turn on his government, which wins him favor with a secret organization in need of such fierce loyalty. This is where The Protagonist learns about inversion; the ability to essentially rewind time and possibly save the world from destroying itself in the past, or from the future to the past, or is the past the future? The concept is fascinating and hilariously convoluted – brace yourself for exposition as clear as a Yoda TED Talk – yet ultimately clicks as we wade into the final act. Inversion is time travel for people who love to pine on about the complications and philosophies of the topic. Like Christopher Nolan, we imagine. Now that Tenet is on home video, enjoy our review and spoilercast for Nolan's latest film. Also, Aaron reviews the new On Demand thriller, Hunter Hunter, about a family living remotely who come to fear they are being targeted by a lone wolf in the wild.

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 7th Annual Holiday Special! It all started with a random idea, we were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we do a little something different, so this year we’re celebrating going into our 10th year as a podcast by looking back at previous holiday specials and assembling some of the best moments from every host - Aaron, John, Amanda, Brian, Scott, and Justin - for the most fantastic holiday special ever! Debating what constitutes a Christmas movie - including a little Die Hard - and specials we love, taking our Movie Battle Royale and sprinkling some Christmas magic on it for a Santa Battle Royale, Christmas cliches we love, and so much more. That’s not all, oh no. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready for as much St. Nick as legally allowed as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how naughty or nice we are, all throughout the episode! With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, Scott’s annual Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don’t want to miss this holiday season!

What do you think is the future of movie theaters?Originally, HBO Max made a deal with a handful of theater chains to simultaneously release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters and on HBO Max the same day and date. Both parties agreed to it, because of the circumstances of theaters currently during the Covid-19 crisis. Last week, Warner Brothers dropped the further news that they will be debuting ALL of their 2021 releases – Matrix 4, Conjuring 3, Godzilla vs. Kong, In the Heights, and more – on HBO Max and in theaters on the exact same day and date. Thing is, theaters haven’t – as of this recording – agreed to that. Also, the creatives and talent behind those films had no idea it was coming either. Christopher Nolan even lashed out and called HBO Max "the worst streaming service". Now, currently HBO Max is stating this is only for one year due to COVID, but the internet is already reacting as if this is the future of movies. Settle in and get your ears ready, because on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're discussing the entirety of this debate. Also on this episode: Aaron's interview with a movie theater general manager on coping with the constant struggles that 2020 produced as well as his thoughts on the HBO Max news, recommendations and discussion on MANK, and our HO Teachable Minute! While Santa - aka Fatman - deals with shrinking sales due to a noticeable lack of NICE in the world, little Billy (Chance Hurstfield) is obsessed with getting everything he wants. When Santa gives Billy a lump of coal because he’s been extremely naughty this year, Billy decides to hire Walton Goggins’ contract killer Skinny Man to hunt down the Fatman and take him out, once and for all. It's darkly comedic, twistedly violent, extremely clever holiday thriller that features strong performances across the board. Who are your favorite typecast actors that took a chance? This week, we talk about our favorite typecast actors that branched outside their norm. A typecast actor is one who becomes strongly identified with a specific character, one or more particular roles, or characters having the same traits or coming from the same social or ethnic groups. For example, if you think of Jason Statham's acting career, you'd probably think of him as the straight-faced action-movie killer. However, he took a chance in the movie Spy where he played a humorous character. Adam Sandler is famously known for his man-child characters, yet with Uncut Gems, he proved yet again there are many layers wrapped into the Sandman. Others might include Robin Williams, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, etc. Also on this episode: our HOT TAKE game where a host takes a movie that is universally loathed but that host loves it, spoiler-free reviews of The Christmas Chronicles 2, Buddy Games, The Hillbilly Elegy, and Fatman; a news roundup, new releases, and our HO Teachable Minute! Who is your favorite President in movies or TV?On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we first take a look back at the legacy of Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Born on August 25,1930, Connery began acting in the '50s before he first launched to fame as James Bond in Dr. No. He went on to break away from Bond in films like Marnie and Robin and Marian, and then did a lot of ensembles and supporting roles in the 70s and 80s including The Untouchables (which is won an Oscar for), Highlander, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. His career continued a box office resurgence as films like The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, Dragonheart, and Entrapment kept him on the A-list until he retired after A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in 2003. He also won American Film Institutes Lifetime Achievement award in 2006. We then shift over to Presidents in Entertainment. Whether it be from film or television, the greatest presidents in entertainment are - just like with any election - subject to personal tastes. Independence Day, 24, The West Wing, entertainment is full of fantastic representations of the United States Presidency. We discuss what constitutes being "presidential", how much movies and TV influences are opinion on actual presidents, and even play a few games with both real and fictional presidents. Happy, Happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween...Welcome tooooooooo The Hollywood Outsider Halloween special! On this episode, we've assembled some of our favorite discussions on horror films and anything related to Halloween! First we build a perfect horror movie, then dive into a bit of history on women in horror before director Darren Lynn Bousman discusses his favorite SAW traps, which leads perfectly into the most iconic villains in horror. To cap everything off, we have a little fun by sharing how we would survive a horror movie. Halloween might look a bit different this year for many of us, but that doesn't mean we can't still laugh and pontificate and the way things used to be. Which 80s family movie do you consider the best of all time?In this episode, we're determining which '80s family movie is the best, why we love them, and defending them with our last dying breath. Okay, maybe not that serious, but we are taking them into battle. Joined by our special Patreon guest who bought her way onto the show (yes, that is indeed a perk), Kristina Flores, the four of us each have two movies we bring to the ring and knock 'em down until we land on just one. Titles like Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Goonies, and E.T. - you don't want to miss out on who takes home the title AND which one landed in the listener top 10 but just wasn't good enough for us. Also on this week's episode: entertainment news roundup, spoiler-free reviews of The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Boys, The Wolf of Snow Hollow, Shithouse, and Love and Monsters, give-away winners announced for Spontaneous, new releases, and our HO Teachable Minute. Here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year: Bad TV Couples, Classic Movie Monsters, and the Perfect Summer Soundtrack. First up, from Episode 384: we’re discussing bad TV couples. Anyone who loves television has a favorite couple, or even several favorites. But have you ever loved a show and two characters getting together just ruined it for you? Are there shows where you just dread any potential romantic couplings – like it just doesn’t belong? We will be discussing all of this and giving our top 3 worst TV couples we’ve experienced. Next, we head to Episode 386: we’re discussing those movie monster classics such as Mummy (1932), Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Dracula, Invisible Man, Creature of the Black Lagoon, etc. These classic horror movies are the beginning drivers for what we know horror movies and horror characters to be today and their visionary masters still reside in the horror hall of fame. We decided – with the upcoming release of The Invisible Man – we need to discuss these classic monsters: how they scared us, our favorites, and why we love them despite being less of a razzle-dazzle than horror movies now. Finally, we head to Episode 395: What are the best songs or themes from movies to crank up once Summer hits? Instead of dwelling on it all, let’s just make our perfect playlist. We each get 10 songs – they can be themes, songs from a movie soundtrack, or just synonymous with a movie – and make our own perfect summer movie soundtrack! That means you could see yourself, windows down, hair flowing, driving or jogging or whatever to our Spotify playlist, The Hollywood Outsider Perfect Summer Movie Soundtrack. Bonus points if you know the chorus… Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

What Do You Think of the Portrayal of Mental Illness in Entertainment? As we close out September, which is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and we’re approaching October 10th, which is World Mental Health Day, we thought it appropriate to take on a discussion about mental illness in entertainment. And this year it’s ironic, since so much of our personal mental health has been affected for better or worse by entertainment due to so many lockdowns across the country. We discuss what Hollywood gets right and what they get wrong about mental illness, the films or characters that opened our eyes to a particular mental illness, and our favorite movies, shows, and characters revolving around mental health. We also discuss our annual Fall TV preview, the shows returning we're looking forward to and new shows that we're anticipating. In this segment, we provide the premiere dates, the network, and the description, so don't miss out! Also on this week's episode: entertainment news roundup, and reviews of Enola Holmes, Spontaneous, Kajillionaire, and The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw. Discussed on this episode

On this episode, we discuss the most satisfying TV character exits. The way a television series handles the exit of a beloved - or hated - character can make or break the relationship with fans. Sometimes they get it incredibly wrong, but other times, they get as close to perfect as fans could hope. Whether a despised character or a beloved one, we are looking back on the greatest character exits in television. Also on this week's episode: our entertainment news roundup, TV Mash-up game, Psycho giveaway from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, upcoming releases, reviews of The Broken Hearts Gallery, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and the ever-so-controversial Netflix film, Cuties, and our HO Teachable Minute. What have been your favorite ambiguous endings? Not every story has a concrete ending and not every writer tells their stories that way. These writers enjoy the continuous debate over what truly happened. Inception is just one example, fairly recent in the scheme of things, that created a ton of water-cooler controversy on whether the token was spinning at the very end... or did it drop? We'll be discussing how we feel about these ambiguous endings, with examples of some of our favorites and how we think they ended. Also on this week's episode: we want to take time to honor the passing of Chadwick Boseman and why this loss has felt so detrimental, new releases, reviews of Nolan's latest film Tenet (stick around for our spoilercast after the regular episode!), The New Mutants, and Bill and Ted Face the Music, Disney's Mulan at a reduced price of FREE in December, and a new take on our HO Teachable Minute. Flavio Alves, the director and co-writer of the new film The Garden Left Behind, discusses his career, his film revolving around the trans experience, and much more on our latest exclusive interview. The Garden Left Behind is available in virtual theatrical locations now, and on VOD September 8th. Carlie Guevara stars as Tina, an undocumented trans woman living with her grandmother, Eliana in Queens. Eliana has brought Tina to America from Mexico, and though she both sternly and affectionately still refers to her grandchild by her birth name of Antonio, Tina’s relationship with her grandmother is one of unwavering love and devotion. Tina is in the process of several major life decisions. She’s trying to juggle her shaky relationship with Jason, her job driving New York passengers to their next stop, and her burgeoning career as an activist following an assault on another trans woman; Tina is also confronting the very real possibility of gender reassignment. To fully become the person she knows she should be will take an enormous amount of support, which she has in her best friend Carol (Tamara M. Williams), as well as a hefty amount of cash, which she has far less of. The film revolves around Tina’s journey, and it’s equal parts sad and beautiful. The Garden Left Behind gives you an insight into the trans experience like few films have done. Read our full review of the film HERE

What are those jobs in film-making that don't receive enough attention? We know who the directors, actors, and even recognize the composers sometimes. However, we want to pay special attention to the people that make a film successful and remain an underappreciated job. For this special episode, we are speaking with Ralph D’Amato, the producer and visionary for the documentary, Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story. Pretending I’m a Superman is a documentary that tells the story of how skateboarding became a part of the mainstream by focusing on the success of the “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” video game franchise. The film stars pro skateboarding legends Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Chad Muska and Jamie Thomas. Ralph started in production on the billion-dollar Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game franchise where he was a producer on the first 8 titles. During that time, his production tasks included character art, animation, legal, licensing and interacting with the skaters and their sponsors. His responsibility also included the soundtracks for the video games, one of which won the first ever MTV Video Music Award for Video Game Soundtrack, Tony Hawk’s Underground. After departing the video game franchise, Ralph went on to become Director of New Media for Tony Hawk Incorporated. In 2017, Ralph founded an independent film production studio called D’Amato Productions, where he produced his first full-length, feature documentary – Pretending I'm a Superman. Ralph took some time to call in and discuss his career, why he wanted to tell the Tony Hawk story, and how this project came to be. Take a listen!

Do you remember that one time, at Summer Camp?Summer camp movies are not completely rare, but the good ones arguably are. And we're not here to talk about movies that mention summer camp or simply take place during summer, but rather films that have the particular setting of summer camp. Examples like the iconic Friday the 13th, more kid-friendly options like SpaceCamp and Addams Family Values, and of course - the raunchy ones like American Pie: Band Camp and Wet Hot American Summer. Because we're fun and wish we could go to summer camp - or do anything, really - we figure, what better time than now to discuss these flicks. Also on this week's episode: our "How Do You Survive?" game returns with a 2020 edition, reviews of I Used To Go Here and The Umbrella Academy: Season Two, a discussion on AMC and Universal's controversial and historical deal, Mulan hits Disney Plus instead of a planned theatrical release, and our HO Teachable Minute. As medical examiners Luis and Charlie explore a curious cadaver known only as John Doe, The Living Dead opens with the beginning of the end...and what happens after. An epic conclusion to the world created by legendary filmmaker George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Creepshow) and completed by celebrated author Daniel Kraus, this novel serves as the definitive cap on Romero's legacy of the undead. Visceral violence, taut emotions, and the magnitude of a clash of classes and identities permeate throughout this landmark accomplishment that finds its inherent themes as timely as ever. THIS is The Living Dead. For our exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with author Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, Blood Sugar, Rotters) to discuss how an invitation from Romero's wife, Suzanne Desrocher- Romero, morphed into Daniel taking George A. Romero's story and utilizing his own words to bring this journey to a fitting conclusion. Romero created and popularized the modern zombie film, and the constraints of filmmaking limited his final vision for his world. Kraus, a vastly talented purveyor of fictional worlds in his own right, discusses molding this final novel from a glorious combination of visions from both artists into a seamless closure of five decades of societal horror. As well as his journey from a high school dreamer through many of his personal works, including the lauded stories conceived for The Shape of Water and Trollhunters, Romero's films and their impact on both society and Kraus himself, and much more. A candid discussion with an undeniable talent, our interview with Daniel Kraus is one you will not want to miss! The Living Dead terrorizes book readers everywhere on August 4, 2020. Pre-order your copy before Aug 4th and upload your receipt HERE to receive an exclusive poster of The Living Dead created specifically for this release!

What makes a great movie dance sequence? We've all been there, watching a movie, getting absorbed into the proceedings...and then it happens! Music kicks up, toes start tapping, hips start moving, and before you know it, we're grooving along with a fantastic dance sequence that almost forces us to join in! Dance sequences don't always work, but when they do, it's some of the most exciting and joy provoking experiences a film can deliver. On this episode, we're discussing what we love about them, and even bring up some of our favorites like Dirty Dancing, Saturday Night Fever, Magic Mike, and so many more! Also on this week's episode: our new game Cancel It!, reviews of Yes, God, Yes and Cursed, a discussion on Tenet's latest delay and what it means for movie theaters, our HO Teachable Minute, and a special message from Psych's Dulé Hill. In this week's episode, we're taking teams of movie or TV characters and pitting them into a fight of sorts - however we want! The concept of this topic originated in our Facebook group from a listener of who would win between the crew of Alien vs the crew of Predator. We decided to expand this idea into a great topic on the show, taking our own battles and listener battles to the ring. With $3 billion dollars in cash getting stuffed into the little bit of clothing that’s left, between Hustlers and Magic Mike XXL, who takes home the most? When Shawn and Gus (Psych) and Monk and Natalie both end up on scene, who solves the mystery first? Can the Power Rangers fend off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or will they face demise? Also on this week's episode: reviews of The Old Guard, Dirt Music, and Relic, and The HO Teachable Minute. Which Summer Franchise of the 2000's is the Best of the Best?Movie Battle Royale is back, but this time: Summer Franchise Edition. We wanted to talk about those franchises released in the 2000's that kept us going back to the theater for the next. The rules are limited: the franchise must have had at least 3 films release in the summer (May-August), they must have occurred within the 2000's, and the MCU films must be broken down (Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers, etc.). Will Mr. Potter survive the Apes? Can Spider-Man swing faster than Fast and the Furious can vroom-vroom? Will Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible be able to take on the Avengers? What Are The Craziest TV Premises You've Ever Heard of or Seen?On this week's episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we're discussing those wacky, crazy TV show premises. There are some TV shows that are so bonkers, you cannot believe a group of someones were high enough to green-light them. A lot of them involve animals, because who doesn't love a plot revolving around talking monkeys, but many of them are supposedly deep thinking dramas or even reality based. Sure ideas like My Mother the Car and ALF make the list, and Cop Rock hits among top ranks, but even shows like The Bachelor / The Bachelorette have a spark of insanity to them. What movies or TV shows do you watch when you're feeling down?On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we are discussing movies and television that pick us up when things are dire. With everything currently affecting the world, and millions of people across the globe enduring isolation or quarantine, we decided what better time to talk about the films or TV we turn to in order to turn our frowns upside down. We discuss the current entertainment predicament - theater closures, production shutdowns, release delays - and how we're coping with it. Also this week, we elected to kick corona to the curb and bring back a little South By Southwest festival action! Despite the SXSW 2020 Film Festival being canceled due to the coronavirus, we reached out to many filmmakers with films that had been officially selected for the festival and reviewed them on this very episode. FBI Profiler Illeana Scott (Angelina Jolie) has been called in to help hunt down an elusive serial killer known for taking the lives of his victims. When a witness to an attack arrives in James Costa (Ethan Hawke), Illeana finds herself caught up in a desperate game to stop the killer before he claims yet another victim. Or herself. How Do You Feel About "Inspired By" In Film?On this episode, we're discussing where we stand on "inspired by". Coming out this past week was Wendy, a film about a group of kids lost on an island that is “inspired by Peter Pan”. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and 1917 were inspired by true events, namely the Manson Murders and World War 1. Just Mercy was a film that recently was inspired by very true events. So many films use this as a way to sell their movies, even when they play fast and loose with the original details they claim inspired them. We have numerous serious films that are “inspired by” works of fiction, as well as real life people and cases, but veer pretty far from the source material. So where do we stand on this: Necessary marketing tactic, or cheap gimmick to garner legitimacy, or something else? Also this week: spoiler-free reviews of The Invisible Man, Guns Akimbo, and All the Bright Places, a fun game called How Do You Survive?, upcoming releases, The HO Teachable Minute, and our coverage of the Beloit International Film Festival. Do You Love Classic Movie Monsters? On this episode, we're discussing those movie monster classics such as Mummy (1932), Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Dracula, Invisible Man, Creature of the Black Lagoon, etc. These classic horror movies are the beginning drivers for what we know horror movies and horror characters to be today and their visionary masters still reside in the horror hall of fame. We decided - with the upcoming release of The Invisible Man - we need to discuss these classic monsters: how they scared us, our favorites, why we love them despite being less of a razzle-dazzle than horror movies now, and what we would bring back if we could. Also this week: spoiler-free reviews of The Call of the Wild, Blood on Her Name, Just One More Kiss, and Hunters, a delightful surprise in the form of an Eric Roberts interview, upcoming releases, The HO Teachable Minute, and much more. On this episode, we're discussing CGI characters, from our first memory of them to our top favorites, joined by guest HO, Troy Heinritz from The Blacklist Exposed. While CGI characters are computer generated, so many of them have had a substantial impact on us, sometimes for inspiration and other times emotionally. Characters like Caesar from Rise, Dawn, and War of the Planet of the Apes, and Rocket and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, have so much charisma, personality, and complexity that they connect on a deeper level with us. We figure with the expansion of CGI use and the recent release(s), that now is better than ever to discuss these effects we remember for years to come. Also this week: spoiler-free reviews of Sonic the Hedgehog and Fantasy Island, upcoming releases, What's This Movie?, The HO Teachable Minute, and much more. Discussed on this episode

Classic Films, Childhood Heroes Brought Back To Life, and the Most Quotable Movies | Best of HO Vol. 3
As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from last year: Classic Films, Childhood Heroes Brought Back To Life, and the Most Quotable Movies. The HO will return with our 2020 Movie Release Extravaganza on January 15, 2020! First up, from Episode 361: We discuss the concept of classic films and what defines them for us. We also debate what we miss about these films, and especially what we don’t. Next, we head to Episode 363: We take a look at those moments when our own childhood heroes are sprung back to life. Not all of these resurgences went as smoothly as we would have hoped, yet that does not take away from the excitement we felt as we all approached opening day or the first time a new episode hit the airwaves. Our favorites, the ones that crushed our dreams, and maybe even one or two that had us questioning our own childhood memories. Finally, we head to Episode 358: If you’re a fan of entertainment, then odds are you randomly drop movie or TV quotes as breadcrumbs to identify your fellow die-hards. “I’ll be back”, “Ouch”, “You can’t handle the truth!” – these are just a few of the quotes people use all the time, often without even realizing they’re doing it. For this section, we discuss why it is we do this practice of using established pop-culture language to handle the conversing for us, as well as what our favorite movie quotes are, as well as the movies we most often find ourselves referencing seemingly every day of our lives. J.J. Abrams returns to Star Wars with The Rise of Skywalker, and to end a 9-film saga. For this go round, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac) have been tasked with locating a hidden planet that contains the key to bringing down the entirety of The First Order, now led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Still conflicted with his connection to Rey, Kylo – aka Ben Solo – struggles and pontificates on his place in this world, as Rey continues to force forward towards completing her journey and saving the galaxy. And yes, Rey and Kylo continue their back-and-forth psychic shenanigans about who is worth redemption, and who is truly pulling whom into the Dark Side. On this episode, we dive head-first into the final film in this epic series (for now), and specifically what we loved and loathed about this latest attempt to satisfy fans worldwide. Is it too safe? Does it wrap up all of those insane loose ends? Does Kylo care about Rey as more than just a frenemy, or would Finn be better suited? Also, what's up with all those cameos?! We have a lot to discuss, and limited time to do it, so this is one podcast you do NOT want to miss!

What were your entertainment highlights of 2019?On this special of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, it is time to say goodbye to the year! Though we have one more episode planned for next week, this is our last regular-esque episode of the show. And for it, we review Jumanji: The Next Level, 6 Underground, discuss Richard Jewell and The Garden Left Behind as well as our thoughts on HBO’s Watchmen finale, and then we close the year with our thoughts on the best this year had to offer. After our goodbyes, we have attached our anniversary episode of Remake This Movie RIGHT from earlier this year. To celebrate Star Wars week, enjoy as Aaron and friends debate the best way to remake The Phantom Menace in proper fashion. For two decades, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace has, much like the Empire, lay in hiding while waiting for the right time to strike. Midi-chlorians, Trade Federations, and Jar Jar Binks have kept this series from its own potential for far too long. Since Disney seems to be in no hurry to correct this wrong, it is left up to our Cinematic Architects to roll up our sleeves and return to work: We’re going to Remake Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace RIGHT! Clips selected from 1999’s Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Discussed on this episode

It's the 2019 HOliday Podcast Special!Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that than with our 6th Annual Holiday Special! It all started with a random idea, as Aaron and Scott were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we do a little something different, so this year we're taking our Movie Battle Royale and sprinkling some Christmas magic on it for a Santa Battle Royale. That's right, who will survive as the best Saint Nick to EVER grace our screens? Only one way to find out. That’s not all, oh no. We also talk about our standards on when decorating can begin, the best holiday movie of the last decade, and the best holiday TV episode of the last decade. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready as Santa Claus drops by the studio to tell us just how wrong (or right) we are all throughout the episode! With a special game from Amanda, Santa in his sleigh, Scott’s annual Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don’t want to miss this holiday season!

Director Tara Wood wastes no time introducing us to her intentions with QT8: The First Eight; this is – first and foremost – a celebration of the works of Quentin Tarantino. It is an important anecdote to note, because if you were hoping for a shockingly tawdry expose plunging into Tarantino’s childhood – ripe with family secrets explaining his fascination with the criminal underbelly, gimps, and a vernacular so profane it might make Richard Pryor blush – then prepare for disappointment. Tara Wood, like so many of us, is a fan. Instead, QT8 takes us on a journey through the past 21 years of Tarantino’s filmography, from Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight, and specifically acts as our guide through the creation and release of those films. How he turned his residuals from The Golden Girls into a feature film career, his inspirations and motivations, most of all his unrivaled knowledge of cinema history. On this special episode, director Tara Wood discusses the intricacies of getting her film made, assembling an exciting cast of actors of Tarantino's films (including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Michael Madsen, Diane Kruger, and many more), how she chose to elaborate on Harvey Weinstein's involvement and Uma Thurman's ill-fated stunt, and why she chose Tarantino to profile. If you're a fan of Quentin Tarantino, this is one interview and film you won't want to miss! Read our full review of the film HERE

What popular character do you wish there was an alternative take on?With JOKER taking over theaters worldwide, we decided this was a prime time to debate whether or not it is ever acceptable to deviate from the source material and offer an alternative take on a popular character. Many people find this to be sacrilege, to even consider changing the motives or backstory of a firmly established character. But what if someone has a brilliant idea? Should they be hindered from realizing their vision simply because we're reluctant to change? After our normal show, we dive into the film itself, JOKER. For months, media outlets have been speculating and predicting various outcomes of the release to this Joaquin Phoenix starring take on the Clown Prince of Crime. No Batman, only Joker. Does it live up to the hype? Is this a direction we could use more of? We discuss the film in its entirety with our JOKER spoilercast. Also this week: a news roundup, John offers up a movie everyone seems to hate yet he loves with his "HOT TAKE", and more. Discussed on this episode

Was 1999 the greatest year in movies? Two decades ago, an absolutely hella fly year in entertainment took hold in 1999. Classics like The Matrix, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Sixth Sense, The Mummy, The Blair Witch Project, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me hit theaters. Not to be outdone, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Angel, ER, Friends, Touched By An Angel, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit took over our television sets. It was a prime time for entertainment. Much has changed since then, but what is even more interesting is how much remains the same. For this special episode, we’re not only going to look back at the year in film and television – complete with commercials and Breaking News segments direct from the year itself – we are going to settle the longstanding debate on if 1999 truly IS the greatest year in movie history!
