What are your rules for needing a sequel? This past weekend, another crop of sequels hit theaters with Maleficent 2 and Zombieland: Double Tap. One movie fans have clamored for a sequel for the past decade, and the other had crickets chirping when you mentioned another chapter. So what determines when a sequel should get made? Is it always just success? Shouldn't there be more to it? On this week's episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we debate when a sequel SHOULD be made. And in following the spirit of Zombieland, we're going to handle this via our own collection of rules, this time those rules that are necessary to green-lighting a proper sequel. Also this week: news roundup, another round of Movie Innuendo, reviews of HBO's Watchmen and Zombieland: Double Tap, and much more. Discussed on this episode

What popular character do you wish there was an alternative take on?With JOKER taking over theaters worldwide, we decided this was a prime time to debate whether or not it is ever acceptable to deviate from the source material and offer an alternative take on a popular character. Many people find this to be sacrilege, to even consider changing the motives or backstory of a firmly established character. But what if someone has a brilliant idea? Should they be hindered from realizing their vision simply because we're reluctant to change? After our normal show, we dive into the film itself, JOKER. For months, media outlets have been speculating and predicting various outcomes of the release to this Joaquin Phoenix starring take on the Clown Prince of Crime. No Batman, only Joker. Does it live up to the hype? Is this a direction we could use more of? We discuss the film in its entirety with our JOKER spoilercast. Also this week: a news roundup, John offers up a movie everyone seems to hate yet he loves with his "HOT TAKE", and more. Discussed on this episode

Was 1999 the greatest year in movies? Two decades ago, an absolutely hella fly year in entertainment took hold in 1999. Classics like The Matrix, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Sixth Sense, The Mummy, The Blair Witch Project, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me hit theaters. Not to be outdone, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Angel, ER, Friends, Touched By An Angel, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit took over our television sets. It was a prime time for entertainment. Much has changed since then, but what is even more interesting is how much remains the same. For this special episode, we’re not only going to look back at the year in film and television – complete with commercials and Breaking News segments direct from the year itself – we are going to settle the longstanding debate on if 1999 truly IS the greatest year in movie history! With the magic of technology and time travel, we hope you enjoy yet another in our annual series of Hollywood Outsider Time Capsule podcasts. Welcome back to 1999! Discussed on this episode

What life skills have you learned from movies and television? The Karate Kid inspired millions to stand up to their bullies. You know what else it did? It taught people useful tools like waxing on, waxing off, and using chopsticks. Countless movies and TV shows have taught us so much over the years that it might be inconceivable to identify any one specific lesson we learned. But we're going to try anyway. On this week's episode of The Hollywood Outsider, original host Brian Williams returns to debate the crucial life lessons we've learned from years of watching movies and TV shows. From our childhoods to the ever present, from social to dating to survival skills, it's all on tap for a very fun discussion on the parents that lived inside our screens. Have movies ever forced you to face your fears? What are you afraid of? Slashers in the woods? Bees? Spiders? Clowns? Do you willingly seek out movies or TV shows that showcase these fears, or avoid them like a Ritchie dodges Paul Bunyan? On this week's From The Outside In topic, we spin off of IT into a discussion on when movies forced us to throw away childish things and face our own innate fears head on, for better or worse. And why it is that movies can sometimes help with this trauma. Also this week, twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, forgetting everything that happened the first time around. When they each receive a phone call from Mike saying Pennywise is back in Derry, they all reunite to confront their fears and destroy Pennywise once and for all. After our normal show, Wayne Henderson from Castle Rock Zone (and our IT Remake This Movie RIGHT episode) joins Aaron and Amanda to drop down into the sewers and discuss the conclusion to Stephen King's magnum opus, IT: Chapter Two. Also this week: a news roundup, Face/Off gets a reboot and we offer our favorite duos, and our spoiler-free reviews of Freaks. Discussed on this episode

![]() As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year: Television's most unappreciated supporting characters, our Stephen King Movie Battle Royale, and TV crossovers we need. First up, from Episode 351: We discuss the most unappreciated supporting characters on television, as well as what unappreciated even means to us. From shows like Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many others, we debate why we love these respective characters and the actors who portray them, as well as why we think audiences never quite appreciated them. Next, we head to Episode 347: We take a look at the movie adaptations of arguably the greatest horror author in history, Stephen King. For several decades now, both readers and audiences have been terrified by the works of Stephen King, in all forms of entertainment. As with anything, not all of his adaptations click, and occasionally the results are scarier than the source material. But those that do, have become classic films that have horrified generations. Because we love King, we left it to our listeners to decide the final eight films with which we’d handle our latest Movie Battle Royale, and the nominees are all great in their own way: Pet Sematary, The Mist, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Stand By Me, IT (2017), The Shining. But which of them is the greatest Stephen King adaptation of them all? Find out on our Movie Battle Royale! Finally, we head to Episode 346: We take a look at that weirdly connective phenomena which is known as the “TV crossover”. Networks have utilized these for years as examples as to how to sell their television shows to people who might not be watching them: Mulder and Scully went to COPS, Angela Lansbury headed to Magnum P.I., and the CW combines an entire DC universe once a year. These events can often be nothing more than publicity stunts, but often times they create something beautiful. And we’re going to throw our two cents in the mix, crossing over TV shows to create several brand new properties! Oh, we have some ideas.

Do you remember the first time one of your childhood heroes came back to life?Maybe it was first seeing Michael Bay's Transformers, and realizing modern technology can bring Optimus Prime roaring back to life. Or perhaps it was witnessing either Obi-Wan or Luke Skywalker returning to screens after decades away. Could it be Ghostbusters, or My Little Pony, or even the Power Rangers as new life was flushed through them with new creative minds behind the camera? Or could it have been seeing a scruffy archeologist back for more whip-cracking adventure spanning multiple continents? On this week's From The Outside In topic, we take a cue from Dora the Explorer's return and take a look at those moments when our own childhood heroes are sprung back to life. Not all of these resurgences went as smoothly as we would have hoped, yet that does not take away from the excitement we felt as we all approached opening day or the first time a new episode hit the airwaves. Our favorites, the ones that crushed our dreams, and maybe even one or two that had us questioning our own childhood memories. Also this week: a news roundup, The Hunt becomes the latest casualty in an ages old issue, MoviePass was shadier than we even knew, and our spoiler-free reviews of Good Boys, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Dora and the Lost City of Gold. What makes a great buddy action duo?Throughout history, actors have been paired up in an effort to double up on fanbases, bringing in a larger audience to watch these heroes take on the evil in the world while quips fly between them. It's a tale as old as time. But why do audiences love these bickering blowhards so much? What is it about a pair of bickering action heroes that enrapture audiences for sequel upon sequel, franchise after franchise? On this week's From The Outside In topic, we take a look at a sub-genre: the buddy action duo. With Fast and Furious unleashing their first spin-off in this very genre with Hobbs and Shaw, it seemed the perfect time to examine the intricacies of these films. Yin and yang, banding together to take down some sadistic bad guy while spectacularly blowing shit up. Usually they're cops or some type of anti-hero. Why do we love them, and who did it the best? Also this week: a news roundup, a new game called What Would've Happened?, and our spoiler-free reviews of Hobbs and Shaw and Velocipastor. Come back next week as we discuss TV anti-heroes! What Constitutes a Classic Film and What Do We Miss About Them?Any movie buff worth their salt is familiar with the term 'classic film', yet that term carries a completely different meaning for each and every fan. Does classic mean from the '60s or before? Do movies from the '80s and '90s qualify as classics? On this week's From The Outside In topic, we discuss the concept of classic films and what defines them for us. We also debate what we miss about these films, and especially what we don't. Inspired by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood's time capsule approach to storytelling, we decided there is no better time to jump down this rabbit hole. Speaking of Hollywood, after our normal show we open up Quentin Tarantino's latest film and debate if the choices Tarantino made here were warranted. Much has been written on this latest film, about the performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, as well as Tarantino's penchant for revisionist history, and as fans of the film we felt it deserved proper attention. So be sure to stick around for our Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spoiler discussion. Also this week: a news roundup, how much we should pay for streaming channels, our spoiler-free review of Amazon Prime's The Boys, and much more. What are the most quotable movies in history? If you're a fan of entertainment, then odds are you randomly drop movie or TV quotes as breadcrumbs to identify your fellow die-hards. ![]() As we take the week off, here are four of our most popular topics from earlier this year: Cult Films, Building a Perfect Found Footage Movie, Shipping Our Favorite Characters in Movies and TV, and Politically Incorrect Comedies. First up, from Episode 338: We discuss the world of cult films. Specifically, what defines a movie as a “cult” film? Is it a fluke, or perhaps the right material at the right time? Do popular films ever reach cult status? Why do films like Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room carry on for decades, while thousands of other films disappear never to be heard from again? We tackle this, as well as what cult films defined us personally as Bill Fulkerson (director of Survival of the Film Freaks) joins in on a topic many of us debate on a daily basis. Next, we head to Episode 341: Found footage is a subgenre in which all or a substantial part of the film is presented as if it were discovered film or video recordings. The events on screen are typically seen through the camera of one or more of the characters involved, often accompanied by their real-time, off-camera commentary. The footage may be presented as if it were “raw” and complete or as if it had been edited into a narrative by those who “found” it. We discuss the highs and lows of found footage, what works and what turns us off about the entire genre. We also each put together our personal takes on the genre itself and build a perfect found footage film. Next, we head to Episode 340: The actual term “shipping” saw its origin around 1995 by fans of the TV show The X-Files, who believed the two main characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, should be or were engaged in a romantic relationship. They called themselves “relationshippers,” at first; then R’shipper, ‘shipper, and finally just shippers. The concept has spawned passionate fans of all types of media, resulting in everything from online arguments to full-on fan fiction. For this topic, we take a look at our favorite characters in both movies and television that we would love to see “get together”, as well as discuss the ones who finally have and might not have worked out as positively as we had hoped. Finally, we come to Episode 343: Did you grow up on films like Airplane, Blazing Saddles, or There’s Something About Mary? Films that often made light of race, gender, sex, handicaps, and all other manners of things that shouldn’t be mocked? If you’re like us, you remember laughing at things that you knew, deep in your soul, were horrible to make light of. Yet, at the same time, these inappropriate outbursts of comedic inspiration broke down even the strongest composure, and even occasionally sparked a conversation that was previously too uncomfortable to have. This topic revolves around politically incorrect comedies, and specifically if the concept of such is currently as dead as the western. When does fan outrage become entitlement? Here are just a few of the thing fans have expressed outrage about recently: Star Wars: The Last Jedi was apparently so horrendous fans petitioned for a remake, fans petitioned to rehire James Gunn for Guardians 3 after Disney dumped him over Twitter issues (which Disney did, in fact, do), Sonic the Hedgehog had teeth that terrified fans and filmmakers took it to heart by pushing the film back to February 2020 to alter the design, once again fans petitioned for a new Batman after Robert Pattinson was cast in the role, and fans that didn’t care for the final season of Game of Thrones famously petitioned for a remake of the season to the tune of 1.5 million plus signatures and counting. Oh, and to connect it all, they also demanded that Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss be banned from Star Wars. Therefore, this week our topic revolves around this sometimes toxic and other times necessary aspect of fandom. Specifically, we debate when does fan outrage become nothing more than entitlement? Also this week: a news roundup, reviews of Aladdin, Brightburn, Booksmart, Slasher Season 3, new releases, and much more. All of our favorite television shows have supporting actors we get behind: Jesse on Breaking Bad, Tyrion on Game of Thrones, Norm on Cheers, George Costanza on Seinfeld. Whenever you discuss the shows you love with friends, these are the supporting characters that will always float to the top of conversation. But what about the other supporting characters? Those that don't often find themselves on Best Of lists? On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we discuss the most unappreciated supporting characters on television, as well as what unappreciated even means to us. From shows like Fringe, Sons of Anarchy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and many others, we debate why we love these respective characters and the actors who portray them, as well as why we think audiences never quite appreciated them. Also this week: a news roundup, spoilers forget the rules, directors are lashing out at critics, reviews of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and The Intruder, and much more. On this week's episode, we take a look at the movie adaptations of arguably the greatest horror author in history, Stephen King. For several decades now, both readers and audiences have been terrified by the works of Stephen King, in all forms of entertainment. As with anything, not all of his adaptations click, and occasionally the results are scarier than the source material. But those that do, have become classic films that have horrified generations. Because we love King, we left it to our listeners to decide the final eight films with which we'd handle our latest Movie Battle Royale, and the nominees are all great in their own way: Pet Sematary, The Mist, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Stand By Me, IT (2017), The Shining. Which will end up as the greatest Stephen King adaptation of all-time? Also this week: a news roundup, Amsterdam takes on 5D, a Stephen King iteration of Movie Innuendo, reviews of Pet Sematary and Shazam, and much more. Discussed on this episode

On this week's episode, we take a look at that weirdly connective phenomena which is known as the "TV crossover". And we're going to throw our two cents in the mix, crossing over TV shows to create several brand new properties! Oh, we have some ideas. At the end of our show, we then tackle Jordan Peele's latest opus, US. A film which follows Lupita Nyong'o as Adelaide, a wife and mother headed back with her family to Santa Cruz, a place where tragedy struck her decades earlier. As they grow closer to the beach where everything happened, Adelaide begins to sense things are very wrong. When four strangers arrive that night in the driveway of their remote home, the terror of US begins to unfold. A follow-up to his wonderful debut, Get Out, Jordan Peele again tackles societal discussion under the guise of horror to mixed results. Take a listen as we dive deep into Peele's complex mythology and debate what works and what doesn't in our US spoilercast! Also this week: a news roundup, Apple TV+ is announced for the Fall, and The Matrix turns 20 years old. Find more info at Discussed on this episode

On this week's episode, we take a look a several superhero movies that we feel didn't quite work. Was it a moment, or an entire script that broke that respective film? Whatever it was, can it be fixed? From there, we offer a few minor tweaks that possibly could have saved a franchise or too. That's right, we're going to fix a superhero movie! At the end of our show, we then wade into the waters of Marvel's latest attempt at launching another hero: Captain Marvel! Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, who essentially wakes up unaware of who she is, or why she has so many powers. The film follows Carol's journey of self-discovery as she partners up with Sam Jackson's Nick Fury to, you know, save the planet. We discuss Marvel's latest introduction of a major character, what works and what doesn't, and where we want Captain Marvel to go next. Did you grow up on films like Airplane, Blazing Saddles, or There's Something About Mary? Films that often made light of race, gender, sex, handicaps, and all other manners of things that shouldn't be mocked? If you're like us, you remember laughing at things that you knew, deep in your soul, were horrible to make light of. Yet, at the same time, these inappropriate outbursts of comedic inspiration broke down even the strongest composures, and even occasionally sparked a conversation that was previously too uncomfortable to have. Our topic for this week revolves around politically incorrect comedies, and specifically if the concept of such is currently as dead as the western. Then we turn our focus to the Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF), which takes place annually in the city of Beloit, Wisconsin. Running for 10 days, typically at the end of Feb or the beginning of March, the festival plays 100+ films from over 25 different countries ranging from narrative features, to documentaries, to shorts, and even features a showdown between Illinois and Wisconsin filmmakers. The films screen in a variety of local venues, so not only is it a festival where a vast assortment of films can be found, but it also supports the local economy and involves residents working as volunteers as well. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we turn a spotlight to BIFF and our thoughts on the festival, as well as reviews for several of the films we screened there. Also this week: Trailer spoilers rage on again, Steven Spielberg takes on Netflix, a special guest drops by for a major announcement, our review of A Madea Family Funeral, and much more. For our first Movie Battle Royale of 2019, we decided to climb aboard the Oscar train and look at some of the Best Picture winners of decades past. If you took a single decade, and looked at all 10 winners, which film would stand the test of time to be crowned the greatest film of that respective decade? So this week, we’re discussing the Best Picture winners of the 2000s. A decade ripe with classics, but only 10 verified winners of The Academy Award’s top prize. Previous guest Scott Calgaro joins us to debate and decide on which one film rises above the others to win the title of the Best Picture of the aughts! ! Will it be Gladiator, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, Crash, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind, Million Dollar Baby, No Country for Old Men, Gladiator, The Departed, or Lord of the Rings: Return of the King? You’re about to find out. Also this week: Rotten Tomatoes comes to their senses with audience scores; A Quiet Place 2, Escape Room 2, and The Haunting of Hill House Season 2(now known as The Haunting of Bly Manor) are all happening; and we discuss our reactions to this year's Oscar ceremony. Found footage is a subgenre in which all or a substantial part of the film is presented as if it were discovered film or video recordings. The events on screen are typically seen through the camera of one or more of the characters involved, often accompanied by their real-time, off-camera commentary. The footage may be presented as if it were "raw" and complete or as if it had been edited into a narrative by those who "found" it. While it wasn’t the first, The Blair Witch Project is the movie that truly launched found footage into the stratosphere, as many people believed that these “TAPES” were real, and that these kids had disappeared in the woods. Other films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield took the genre to varying heights, and countless others proved that it was the cheapest possible option to make a movie on an indie budget. Like any genre, found footage is stacked with pluses and minuses. On this week's podcast, we discuss the highs and lows of found footage, what works and what turns us off about the entire genre. We also each put together our personal takes on the genre itself and build a perfect found footage film. Also this week, Netflix and Marvel officially parts ways plus a slew of entertainment news. Reviews of How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Alita: Battle Angel, a peek at new releases, and much more. Discussed on this episode

Shipping, initially derived from the word relationship, is the desire by fans for two or more fictional characters (in film, literature, television etc.) to be in a romantic relationship. The actual term "shipping" saw its origin around 1995 by fans of the TV show The X-Files, who believed the two main characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, should be or were engaged in a romantic relationship. They called themselves "relationshippers," at first; then R'shipper, 'shipper, and finally just shippers. The concept has spawned passionate fans of all types of media, resulting in everything from online arguments to full-on fan fiction. On this episode, we take a look at our favorite characters in both movies and television that we would love to see "get together", as well as discuss the ones who finally have and might not have worked out as positively as we had hoped. Also this week, Shaft and Child's Play finally receive trailers, Avatar begins live-action production, and Superman is taken to task for his building relocation skills. Our feature this week is Discover An Actor's Gem, where we discuss an unheralded film in a favorite actor's filmography and why it deserves a watch. Reviews of Cold Pursuit, The LEGO Movie 2, The Man Who Killed Hitler and the Bigfoot, a peek at new releases, and much more. Discussed on this episode

Television spin-offs are everywhere. Once a TV show garners success, an executive somewhere is trying to figure out a way to borrow a few of those characters, toss them into another setting, and see if they can duplicate those numbers. Often times, it crashes and burns. But there are many success stories along the way, including The Jeffersons, Young Sheldon, Benson, and Frasier. There have also been a few film characters spun off into their own successful shows, recently Cobra Kai completely redefined how many think of The Karate Kid. So this week, our hosts discuss the world of TV spin-offs, and even come up with several spin-off ideas they'd like to try themselves. Also this week, The Batman has been a project with an excessive amount of speculation, and finally director Matt Reeves and current Batman Ben Affleck have elaborated on the details, Hobbs and Shaw's first glimpse of the Fast and Furious spin-off has hit, Y: The Last Man finally moves to series. Another round of Movie Innuendo arrives as we determine which lines in The LEGO Movie aren't quite as innocent as they seem. Reviews of Velvet Buzzsaw and Russian Doll, a peek at new releases, and much more. Discussed on this episode

On this week's episode, we discuss the world of cult films. Specifically, what defines a movie as a "cult" film? Is it a fluke, or perhaps the right material at the right time? Do popular films ever reach cult status? Why do films like Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room carry on for decades, while thousands of other films disappear never to be heard from again? We tackle this, as well as what cult films defined us personally as Bill Fulkerson (director of Survival of the Film Freaks) joins in on a topic many of us debate on a daily basis. Also this week, TV show remakes are hitting overdrive as Starship Troopers, Resident Evil, and Child's Play all receive television reboots, Amazon offers big paydays at Sundance, and Universal retools their Dark Universe plans. Reviews of Polar and Wretch, a peek at new releases, another round of I Can't Believe We Thought That Was Cool where we ponder if Chasing Amy's antics would play to today's audiences, and much more. The year is ending with a bang, as Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee all hit theaters for the holiday season. One, an enormously charismatic hero with the ability to communicate on a deeper level with every living being while simultaneously saving lives. The other two, Aquaman and Bumblebee. On this special episode, we explore each of these three behemoths and their respective plots and details. First up, we trip a light fantastic as we sashay into Mary Poppins Returns! Emily Blunt picks up the umbrella and returns to theaters just in time to put that stoic narcissism and delightful penchant for a song to the test and save the Banks family from certain ruin. Joined by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blunt grasps ahold of Mary Poppins and makes it her own, but does it live up to the original? Poppins, music, insanity, and family - we explore a world of imagination as Aaron and Amanda discuss Mary Poppins Returns. Next, Bumblebee. Set in 1987, Hailee Steinfeld stars as Charlie, a young girl who has recently lost her father and her inner light. She’s a mechanic like her dad, and she’s desperate to repair her father's car when frustration leads her to an old bug. Which happens to be Bumblebee after his unfortunate voice incident. The two become fast friends before having to fend off both an irrational government, and a pair of rowdy Decepticons dead-set on information Bumblebee has on Optimus Prime. Lastly, we dive into DC's latest hero, Aquaman. Born a son to an underwater Queen (Nicole Kidman) and a human, Arthur Curry learns he is destined to rule the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Along the way, he must challenge his brother Orm, and fend off the villainous Manta. For this section, Aaron is joined by John Davenport and Brian Williams to debate Arthur Curry's journey towards his rightful place as King, Jason Momoa's entry into the DC Universe, Amber Heard's hair, Patrick Wilson's flair, and James Wan's direction. ![]() As we take the week off, here are four of our most popular topics on our final Best of 2018 compilation: Behind-the-Scenes Hollywood Stories, Pixar Movie Battle Royale, Is Television Getting TOO Serialized, and Let's Puppet Up A Movie. As well as a short collection of outtakes from our January special on former host, Justin Macumber. First up, from Episode 317: Hollywood has been inundated with scandal and sadness for the last long while, therefore on this segment, we’re bringing forth the joy! We are going to share some of our favorite stories we’ve found revolving around Hollywood. Possibly a celebrity doing something for a child, a fascinating story behind a production, or a celebrity’s personal triumph. This is about sharing some favorite Hollywood behind-the-scenes stories! Next, we head to Episode 323: When 24 hit the air many years ago, it was an eye-opener in terms of what television could do. For 24 consecutive episodes, this series told one single day’s worth of story. Each episode leading directly into the next, leaving little chance to jump into the show mid-season and have any idea what was going on. Flash forward to 2018, and it seems like EVERY show is doing this. Unless you’re a slave to CBS, television is dominated by the season-long arc. Some even take it a step further – like Breaking Bad or Walking Dead – and make the entire series one singular story. Has it gotten to be too much, though? Have we finally arrived at the breaking point? Is television getting TOO serialized? Next, we head to Episode 315: In 1995, Pixar released their first feature-length film, the computer animated classic Toy Story. Soon after, A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2 released in quick succession, with titles continuing to drop annually. The studio revolutionized animation for the modern generation, and in 2006 was purchased by the previous dominator in this arena: Disney. Over the past 20-plus years, Pixar has racked up billions in box office receipts, and even more in memories for movie fans. On this segment, our four hosts pick our two favorite Pixar classics, and break down what is the greatest Pixar film in history! Finally, we come to Episode 324: What is the deal with puppets? Are we running out of human actors? Then why do we enjoy puppets so much? On this segment, we discuss the world of puppets, if we prefer the humorous or horrific brand, and most importantly: what movies would instantly improve with the addition of puppets? Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that then with our 5th Annual Holiday Special! It all started with a random idea, as Aaron and Scott were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born! Every year we do a little something different, so this year we are discussing Christmas movie clichés. Not in a negative way though, we are talking about clichés we love to see in our favorite holiday films. That’s not all, oh no. We also throw out recent additions to our holiday movie rotations and debate how difficult it is to make a holiday special or movie in today's climate. The Christmas spirit kicks into overdrive as we open up and share our personal memories of the holiday season, stories that remind us of Christmas. And no holiday special would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, so get ready as Santa Claus drops by the studio to read a few HO listener letters! With a special game from Amanda, a little whimsy from Aaron, Scott’s annual Christmas Poem, and a lot of fun for everyone – This is the one podcast you don’t want to miss this holiday season! Football has become the American pastime. A team sport that is equal parts sheer brutality and entertainment. Any given Sunday, the country is enthralled by the NFL and its merry band of outlaws, tossing a leather ball back-and-forth on a field playing a kid’s game, and we eat it up. And because of that, we also love a great football movie! But what defines a “football movie”? Does it require rah-rah speeches? Does the actual sport need to be played? Most importantly, what IS the greatest football movie of all-time? Well, strap on your helmet, because we’re hitting the gridiron this week and aiming for a touchdown: this is our Football Movie Battle Royale! Also this week: discussion of recent films including Boy Erased, Robin Hood, Astral, The Christmas Chronicles, and the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Another round of Movie Innuendo, what franchise would we most want to see have another film, and much more. Discussed on this episode

The Crimes of Grindelwald is a direct sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, and a prequel to the beloved Harry Potter franchise. The worlds are vastly interconnected and we begin to see their ties more and more as the Beasts world progresses. In follow up to the last, after being recruited by Albus Dumbledore, we are to follow Newt Scamander, Tina, Jacob, and Company as they fight the battle against Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) – one of the most powerful wizards who seeks to dis-empower muggles (non-magic folk) by using Credence (Ezra Miller)…once we truly understand who he is, that is. On this bonus podcast episode, we discuss what we think of the Wizarding World to this point, our spoiler-free thoughts on The Crimes of Grindelwald, and then we move in to spoiler territory - with a fair warning - to break down the main characters, the weaknesses, and the strengths of this sequel. The Crimes of Grindelwald is vastly splitting the J.K. Rowling fandom world, so listen in to find out why!

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Mrs. Doubtfire. A movie revolving around a divorced dad who was simply not allowed to see his kids whenever he wanted. So in an effort to spend more quality time with them, he dressed up like a nanny and landed a job inside his ex-wife’s house to help raise these kids. In 1993, Robin Williams sold us on this premise as whimsical, charming, even oddly supportive. But in 2018, Mrs. Doubtfire is terrifying! This week, we look at films that featured a plot or subplot that we initially found sweet, but after taking off our nostalgia goggles, we find it quite disturbing. Also this week: reviews of Bohemian Rhapsody and Mail Order Monster, debate if this R-rated comic book genre is getting carried away, discuss how John Carpenter’s They Live has endured for 30 years, and much more. Television is stuffed with content these days, and the quality supports the excess. But what happens when we as an audience become hooked on a series, and it continues even after the quality and ratings drops? What happens when our favorite TV shows go on too long? This week we dive into this very real problem of fandom: when to leave your favorite shows. With TV series staples like Walking Dead and The Simpsons seeming to live forever, at what point is it time for us to cut and run? Also this week: reviews of Curvature and Mid90s, social media is dictating the future of TV, Pirates of the Caribbean reboots without Johnny Depp, a new game, and much more. Discussed on this episode

Three decades ago, an absolutely rad year in entertainment took hold. Classics like Die Hard, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Rain Man, and Scrooged hit theaters. The Cosby Show, Cheers, Roseanne, and Murder, She Wrote took over our television sets. It was a prime time for entertainment. Much has changed since then, but what is even more interesting is how much remains the same. For this special episode, we’re not only going to look back at the year - complete with sponsor breaks and Breaking News segments - we are going BACK to 1988! With the magic of technology and time travel, this podcast is being presented to you directly from our HO Time Capsule vault. This IS 1988! Discussed on this episode

Some of these are so iconic, we spend countless hours contemplating further adventures with these foes, perhaps even plotting them against heroes in other universes. Over the past several months, we’ve talked a lot about we’ve talked a lot about FOX’s Lethal Weapon replacing Clayne Crawford’s Riggs with Seann William Scott’s Cole. They aren’t the exact same character, but in this instance they might as well be, as both occupy the position of co-lead in a buddy-cop relationship. So, in the spirit of replacing original actors, we thought it was a great time to discuss if maybe, sometimes, it’s actually not so bad after all. Cinema’s history books are riddled with cases where an actor needed to be recast for one reason or another. Whether it’s due to temperament, personal issues, or sheer lack of talent, it just becomes necessary at times. Even the most famous film series have taken their stabs at it (most notably James Bond and Dumbledore), and occasionally TV series will just need to swap actors out between seasons. On this episode, we debate if these situations could actually improve the properties, as well as our picks for the best and worst examples of recasting. Also this week: Netflix wants you to choose your own endings, you could see a PG-13 Deadpool, reviews of A Star Is Born and Hell Fest, Halle Berry’s career, and much more. Discussed on this episode

When 24 hit the air many years ago, it was an eye-opener in terms of what television could do. For 24 consecutive episodes, this series told one single day’s worth of story. Each episode leading directly into the next, leaving little chance to jump into the show mid-season and have any idea what was going on. It was a novelty, and it was fantastic to watch unfold. This week, our topic is simple: Is television getting TOO serialized? Also this week: The Oscars add a category for Popular Achievement in Film, a Chicago cemetery has a movie night, Blade turns 20, reviews of The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians, and more. Blindspotting, which is in theaters now, follows the friends of Collin and Miles. Collin has only three days to go on his probation, and all he has to do is stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, his best friend Miles is a beacon for it. As Collin and Miles work together as movers, an event causes Collin to miss his mandatory curfew, and puts their friendship to an ultimate test. Blindspotting was written by Daveed Diggs and Rafel Casal, who star as Collin and Miles, respectively, and the film skillfully highlights numerous factors within friendships, race and income disparity, all set against the backdrop of Oakland. And Michael Yezerski was given the task of meshing it all through an eclectic score covering several genres and styles. For our exclusive interview, we discuss how Michael came into composing scores for film and TV, what it was like working on this film, and what he hopes to achieve next. With Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Ethan Hunt yet again prevails over a mission that makes no logical sense, yet thrills us all. And that is our springboard for this week’s topic: Impossibly Impossible Missions. Movies often require a suspension of disbelief, and often times, films with a mission at hand – i.e., a plan that benefits the greater good – require you to physically remove your brain from its holster in order to continue. This week, we’re looking at several missions that we believe could never have resulted in success in reality. A vigilante is any person who takes the law into their own hands to avenge a crime. When you mention the word, a few names immediately pop into mind: Batman, The Bride, Paul Kersey, The Equalizer. Film vaults are stock full of men and women who have been wronged for one reason or another, and chose to journey outside of the law to avenge those wrongs. Yet in the scheme of things, the facts are simple: these people are criminals. This week, we discuss what it is about vigilantes that excite audiences around the world. Why do we love what these people do? Is it right to applaud mass murderers? Are vigilantes fundamentally justified? It's an interesting topic about a group of people we often applaud, without really considering what it is we're applauding. Also this week: Our reviews of Skyscraper and Netflix's How It Ends, new releases including The Equalizer 2, Unfriended: Dark Web, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and more; news including Joss Whedon returning to TV via HBO, Zombieland 2 is a go, and much more. As we take the week off, here are three of our most popular topics from earlier this year, as well as our review of The First Purge AND major Top Gun 2 news. Also, visit PodcastAwards.com and vote for The HO in People's Choice and TV/Film! First up, from Episode 301, it's the most emotional relationships on television. We discuss some of those relationships in TV that either broke or healed our aching hearts. Perhaps they filled our cups with joy, or maybe their angst flowed over into our own realities. It’s an intriguing conversation and there is no better time to discuss it. Next, we head to Episode 299 where we debated the best way to defeat an iconic movie hero! The villains rarely win, which means heroes are far more difficult to bring down. Therefore, on this episode we put ourselves firmly in the shoes of supervillains and megalomaniacs everywhere and determine exactly how we would bring down iconic movie heroes such as Iron Man, Batman, Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Luke Skywalker! Finally, we come to Episode 306 and when it's time for the hero to walk away. Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it’s just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Our topic this episode revolves around this very concept of when is it OK for a hero to walk away? Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

Dark River stars Ruth Wilson as Alice, a woman who departed her family ranch in North Yorkshire many years ago. After earning a living as a contracted sheep-shearer, Alice returns home 15 years later upon hearing of the death of her father, Richard (Sean Bean). Her intention is not to mourn, but to claim the family land from her brother Joe (Mark Stanley). Refuting her assertion on the grounds that she abandoned her rights by leaving, Joe and Alice begin a tale of siblings separated by trauma and abuse, while delving into the psychological scars that are left, for everyone involved. Following her acclaimed project, The Sheltered Giant, director Clio Barnard stops by to discuss her latest. Dark River is a dour tale of a family plagued by the sins of their father, containing stellar performances from leads Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley, which are enhanced by Barnard’s atmospheric direction. Each landscape and background emerges as a deeper character in this sorrowful immersion into familial bonds and tragedy. If you remember back in the 80s and 90s, television began the trend of discussing “True Crime” events through dramatizations on shows like Unsolved Mysteries or as docuseries such as Cops. There have always been shows devoted to investigative reporting, yet it seems as though this was the moment when the genre of “True Crime” truly began to percolate. The genre continued to explode, arriving at our current moment with juggernaut docuseries such as Making a Murderer and Evil Genius, and also scripted true crime shows revolving around the O.J. case and Versace. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both here, so what better time to discuss the evolution of television families? We all remember watching various families on our favorite TV shows, but why did we connect with some over others? What was it about this obviously fictional yet familial bond that, often times, felt more real than our own? This week, we discuss how our beloved TV families have evolved over the years, from safe sitcom messages of the moment, to modern-day issues where it seems every family has a criminal mastermind behind it. Also this week: Movie trailers and their lies, why do we still care about box office records, reviews of Tully and Anon, and much more. Join in on our conversation and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

With the largest opening in history, everyone is talking about Avengers: Infinity War. So we thought, as we celebrate 10 years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let’s go back to the beginning and look at how we got here. This week, we discuss all of the films BEFORE Infinity War. We begin with Iron Man, and how Marvel gambled on a risky talent by the name of Robert Downey, Jr. While he is beloved worldwide for his portrayal of Tony Stark, as well as many other projects, he was very much an actor studios were leery of. By staking the entirety of their future on him, they hedged what turned out to be one of the greatest bets in cinematic history. From here we move on to discuss everything else Marvel has attempted to do in the past 10 years. From their struggles – recasting Bruce Banner and War Machine – to their insane successes (what’s a Guardian of the Galaxy again?), we tackle it all on this extra-Marvelous episode that any film fan won’t want to miss. AFTER this discussion, we take off the Spoiler Gauntlet and jump into Avengers: Infinity War! What we loved, what we loathed, favorite moments, personal experiences, and especially: what we thought of that ending! There is a lot to talk about this week, so take a listen. This year, theaters are being treated to a monkey tearing down a skyscraper, an underwater hero who looks like a grunge rocker, and even Jason Statham quipping at a 70 foot Megalodon shark. In short, these films have plots that are insane. On this podcast, we discuss the very concept of absurdity – can ANY plot work with the right cast and crew? Is it easier to accept a giant gorilla or robot trashing downtown Chicago if you have The Rock or Shia LaBeouf on hand? How crazy is TOO crazy? Also this week: Summer movie going habits, when do we quit TV shows we love, are TV revivals going too far, reviews of Traffik and Rampage, upcoming releases, and much more. Traffik follows Brea (Paula Patton), a journalist recently sidelined due to a distinct lack of immersion into her reporting. The timing could not be better when her boyfriend, John (Omar Epps), whisks her away for a lush romantic hideaway, tucked in the solace of the wilderness. Happenstance meets tragic timing as Brea and John cross paths with a young woman seemingly pleading for help, and a conspicuous biker gang looking for trouble. After an intense encounter at a local gas station, the couple arrive at the picturesque retreat where a weekend of indulging awaits. An ill-timed visit from mutual friends (Laz Alonso and Roselyn Sanchez) proceeds a horrific development: Brea has found the desperate woman’s phone in her bag. As fate would have it, she has just arrived demanding the phone back. And she is not alone. Traffik sets the board as any number of thrillers, as our heroes find themselves trapped in an isolated locale with a group of sadistic outlaws bent on their demise. What sets the film apart, are the very intense stakes at play for our characters amid the backdrop of sex trafficking. As tensions escalate, a tragic everyday truth emerges from beneath the fiction, and Traffik take an enthralling, yet decidedly pointed look at this modern true horror. Traffik is pulse-pounding entertainment with an underlying message. And to elaborate on that message, as well as the film itself, is writer and director Deon Taylor. Responsible for the hit, Meet the Blacks, as well as its soon-to-be-released sequel, and the upcoming Dennis Quaid thriller, Motivated Seller, Taylor has been a filmmaker on the rise for several years. With Traffik, he veers into a complicated field of thriller meets education as our characters confront a very existential threat in today’s world: sex trafficking. Enjoy our exclusive interview with writer and director Deon Taylor as he discusses his new film, Traffik, releasing nationwide on April 20, 2018.

40 years ago, television options were vastly different. Three channels, or maybe thirteen depending on where you great up, and not much else. If the President had a speech, your TV night was shot. As time rolled on, our entertainment options continued to gain traction, each decade taking another turn into more content. Once Netflix introduced streaming as a primary option, our choices exploded. By the time 2018 is over, there will have been around 500 scripted television shows on the air. Between network TV, cable, premium, and now streaming, have we finally arrived at the place where we simply have TOO MUCH television? Also this week: Westworld trolls its audience, The Rock opens up about his beef with Vin Diesel and we discuss how these dramatic tiffs influence us, Rogue One reshoots explained, reviews of A Quiet Place and Blockers, and much more.

Very few directors have shaped pop culture, but even fewer could argue against Steven Spielberg as leading that field. From his early days in the 70s, Spielberg has gifted us with so many timeless classics, it has become increasingly difficult to determine which one, of so many wonderful films, is truly THE BEST. Well, this week, we’re going to decide! Eight Spielberg films will enter the ring, each with their own case for the greatest. Could it be Jurassic Park, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, or maybe even Raiders of the Lost Ark? After much debate, a final winner will emerge. This winner will be crowned The Greatest of All-Time! THIS is the Steven Spielberg Movie Battle Royale! Also on this week’s show, we stay with the Spielberg theme by taking a look at his legacy, the variety in his filmography, and what he meant to us directly. We also dive into Ready Player One with our thoughts on his latest film, as well as offer a special announcement by show’s end. You won’t want to miss this magical episode of The Hollywood Outsider! With two festivals in three weeks, we have watched a LOT of movies recently. So much that something dawned on us: in all of these journeys of the human spirit, why does the hero never walk away? Think about it, does it make a hero less heroic if they reach a point where it’s just too much for them? Were there moments in a movie or TV show where a hero going forward seemed to be the absolutely wrong choice? Our topic this episode revolves around this very concept of when is it OK for a hero to walk away? Also this week: Lord of the Rings TV is going to be very expensive, Steven Spielberg doesn’t believe Netflix should be eligible for Oscars, reviews of Pacific Rim: Uprising and Unsane, upcoming releases, and another wrong of You Just Don’t Get It.
