Our topic this week: When is it time to admit our favorite films don’t hold up, and we are just blinded by nostalgia? SO many of our favorite films are having pinnacle anniversaries, but are they really as good as we remember them? Or are we all just wearing rose-colored glasses? We discuss this, as well as some of our favorites that both do and do not stand the test of time.

Stay after the normal episode as discuss The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and the series as a whole, now that it has wrapped up.

Our topic this week revolves around dead or tired film franchises. Creed is hitting theaters, and it takes the son of a major character, as well as Rocky himself, and reinvigorates a franchise. If we could reinvent one, using any secondary or unseen character we wanted, how would we do it?

Stay after the normal episode as we take a moment to give our thanks.

We tackle our listener questions this week as we hit a trifecta of topics!

First up - What books do we still wish would desperately be turned into films? Every book you can imagine has been adapted, yet there are always a few we're still waiting on.

Next up - Comedy pairings. There are so many pairings in film and television, actors grouped together in order to make us laugh hysterically...in theory. So, who are the BEST comedy pairings? We tackle this enormous topic, and also offer our picks for the worst comedy teams.

Lastly - Origin stories. They're everywhere. Not only are they everywhere, they're happening for characters whose origins we already know full and well. What is the obsession with origin stories in Hollywood? Does every character need his motivations explained?

Of course we have news, reviews, and even more – So join in on our conversation and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider!

For this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie Podcast, we discuss two completely different listener topics:

First up – What are some of our favorite badly translated movie titles? When American films travel abroad, they are often retitled, and sometimes those titles are just a wee bit different than you would think. We discuss some of the most hysterical that we’ve found.

Next up is digital vs. physical media. Many people feel very strongly about this topic, one way or the other. There are those who prefer to build a Blu-ray or DVD collection of enormous proportions, while there are others who prefer to have everything via iTunes or Flixster. We discuss the pros and cons of this debate, as well as some of our listener’s thoughts.

John Depew is unlike many filmmakers, as he was already an accomplished businessman when he decided to finally follow his dream and become an actor. After years of successful and award-winning work – including 2 EMACT awards for his theater work – John decided to go all-in and open his own production company, Wild Beagle Productions, as well he began directing his own films.

With Lazarus Rising, John Depew throws his talents behind an action-thriller revolving around a team of assassins. Listen as Aaron sits down with John for an exclusive interview to discuss Lazarus Rising, what it takes to make an independent film, how he manages to round up quality actors on a smaller budget, and much more.

The time has come! Our 4th Annual Summer Movie HO Awards have arrived! Where did the summer end up for us overall, as well as versus last year? What was lacking? What did we learn? After we ponder these topics, it’s time for the awards!

Now, you know we cannot do our awards like everyone else, that’s just not how we do things. So get ready for what REALLY mattered this summer: Most memorable scene, best action scene, best thrill, The Darwin Award for most idiotic character, biggest badass, best movie line, and much more. All of those categories are then capped off by our picks for Most Disappointing, Worst, and (finally) our Top 3 movies of the summer. We conclude the awards by listing our compiled listener picks for the top 3 films of the summer.

This is one of our favorite episodes to record of the year, and this time is no different. (Be sure to read Aaron’s article on the Top 7 things he learned this summer) After the fun, be sure to stay after the credits to hear our team’s sentimental goodbye to horror legend, Wes Craven.

Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

  • (17:33 – 1:31:43) The 2015 Summer Movie HO Awards

"Remake This Movie RIGHT!" is a bi-weekly podcast where we take a classic film that is actively being remade by Hollywood studio execs, and craft our own version of how a modern retelling should go. Does the story need updating? Should characters or motives be tweaked? Do we need more muppets? We take all factors into account, concoct our film, and then offer a Final Pitch to you in movie trailer form. By the end of each episode, we will Remake This Movie RIGHT!

What makes a great movie dad?

Movie Dads is our topic this week, as we dive into what makes a great movie dad? Is a great dad a protector, a nurturer, or all of the above? We discuss this, as well as our picks for most and least favorite movie dads.

Then be sure to stick around as we jump into Colin Trevorrow’s attempt to rejuvenate the Jurassic Park franchise with Jurassic World. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard star as two park staff fighting to fend off an attack on Isla Nublar by the newly modified Indominus Rex. Does the movie work? Were we happy to return to the island? Where does the film sit in relation to the other Jurassic Park films? Join in on our discussion and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

Why do movie trailers lie to us?

We recently discussed marketing in today’s films. As that was a very wide-ranging conversation, one of our listeners – John - asked us to elaborate on movie trailers themselves. Specifically, those trailers that painted an awful film as brilliance or made a great film look like hot, sticky garbage. As we discuss movie trailers and the lies they tell, we also focus on those trailers that duped us personally. Join in on the discussion and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

What is better storytelling in telvision: Procedurals or Serialized?

Television has continued to evolve, as we as a culture have. Where we once sat together every night as a complete family unit, only watching whatever safe TV show was on one of our 3 channels, we now have THOUSANDS of options every night on hundreds of network, cable, and streaming channels. As television has evolved, so has how it is told. One of our listeners, Rex, recently asked us to discuss the differences between procedural and serialized television. Specifically, what are the positives and negatives to both? As we dive into it, we also discuss our favorites in both and what makes them so exceptional in this regard. Join in on the discussion and listen to this very topic on the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

“Tomorrowland” follows Casey (Britt Robertson), a teen prodigy with a NASA engineer dad and an abundance of curiosity. After a random encounter with a mysterious pin that seems to transport her to a magical world, Casey sets off to find a former boy-genius inventor Frank (George Clooney), who could possibly help her solve this elusive enigma. They set off on a journey of dire circumstances, yet also one of hope.

For this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider, Aaron is joined by Troy Heinritz (The Blacklist ExposedUnder the Dome Radio) to discuss the film in detail. From their initial, spoiler-free, thoughts to their more detailed reactions to director Brad Bird's bold new world.

Will families enjoy this? Did the minimal exposure to the actual film through marketing ultimately help or hurt the film? What did we think of Robertson, Clooney, and Hugh Laurie? Does the world electrify us in the way that Walt Disney and his films have so often managed to pull off? Most importantly - What are the critics missing on this one?

All this, and much more, is discussed on this special episode. Tomorrowland is an explosion of imagination that reminds us of early Spielberg. Whether you enjoyed the film, disliked it, or maybe even are still debating seeing it - this discussion is for you!

Mad Max: Fury Road is director George Miller's return to the world he created in 1979 when Mel Gibson first burst onto the scene. This time, Tom Hardy steps into Max's boots in a tale of an estranged cult follower (Charlize Theron) attempting to break the concubines of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keyes-Byrne) free. What follows is the very definition of a non-stop action opus!

For this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider Podcast, Aaron and Scott discuss their reactions to what many are calling the masterpiece of the summer. Does it live up to the hype? Are people once again blind to the truth? Or could this be the bombastic thrill we've been waiting for? Take a listen and find out!

Movie marketing has changed exponentially over the last decade or two. Where a good film trailer used to just give you an idea of what a movie is about, now you can often time have an entire movie spoiled for you by the studios themselves before you even buy a ticket! Is this a good practice, or just a necessary one? Join in on the discussion and listen to this very topic on the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider.

For this special interview, Aaron sat down to talk to the director of the new documentary, “Misery Loves Comedy“, Kevin Pollak. Yes, THAT Kevin Pollak. You know the famous actor and comedian from classics such as “A Few Good Men” and “The Usual Suspects”, as well as his numerous other film and television credits, or possibly you know him from his own “Chat Show”, where Kevin speaks with other famous, creative talents.

For our conversation, Kevin is here to discuss his new film, “Misery Loves Comedy”. What is his “Misery” about? Here is the official synopsis:

Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Judd Apatow, Lisa Kudrow, Larry David, and Jon Favreau are among over 60 famous funny people featured in this hilarious twist on the age-old truth: misery loves company. In-depth, candid interviews with some of the most revered comedy greats who each share their unique path and a life devoted to making strangers laugh.

With arresting anecdotes and insights from the comedy underbelly that reveal a performer’s deep desire to connect with audiences, Kevin Pollak’s MISERY LOVES COMEDY is the definitive master class on the art of humor that details a comedian’s rare ability to help us understand life as only they can.

That is the official description. What we will tell you is that this is the closest we have ever been to truly understanding what makes a comic, a comic. Why would anyone want to spend every day of their lives trying to make someone else laugh? Were they always a comedian, or were they simply masking their pain? Finally, does a person have to be miserable, to be truly funny? This film answers all of those questions.

Kevin and Aaron discuss “Misery Loves Comedy” in detail. From why Kevin wanted to make a film on such a personal topic, to some of the creative directions he chose for the film, and even how he managed to snag every high-profile comedian for the film! The film itself is a wonderfully insightful exploration into the psyche of a comedian. Of many comedians, in fact.weI highly recommend checking the film out, which is available now on iTunes and On Demand, and is releasing to theaters beginning April 24th.

A charming guy and a brilliant talent, it was a pleasure to talk to Kevin about “Misery Loves Comedy”, and we hope you guys enjoy the interview as much as we did.

Sometimes a film is more than a film. Other times a movie is simply something meant to cause you and your friends to laugh and scream. And then there are those films that make no sense, that somehow think they are smarter than everyone else, and some yahoo slaps the tag of 'Art' on them. We discuss these 'art' films this week, those movies people consistently remind you that you, in fact, 'do not get it'.

With Paul Walker's passing triggering a necessary change in the Fast and Furious franchise, we decided to take a look at the phenomenon of a TV or film series having to decide on recasting a character. Sometimes it is due to loss, but many other times it is due to an actor's ego or selfish needs. So when an actor departs, how do you know when it should be recast versus just letting the character go?

Last year around Valentine’s Day, we talked a bit about love and what warms the cockles of our hearts. We are doing that again this year, but a little different.

So, you’re watching a movie about a relationship. A comedy, drama, action spectacle, whatever it is. And then something happens that takes you aback, or maybe makes you realize these two should be with anyone else on the planet other than each other. This week, we’re talking about movies where the couples just don’t work. Sometimes the stars have no chemistry, and other times the writing is just awful. This is when romance goes wrong.

We have all see those films where someone new moves in, or comes knocking at the door, or starts babysitting, or we have a torrid affair with…and they seem awfully normal. Then, as the movie unfolds, we realize they are as crazy as the day is long and need to be put down with a quickness. On this episode of The HO, we are discussing these seemingly normal psychos; what terrifies them about us and what would tip us off if we lived in the film. Also, who is our favorite movie psychopath?
