Characters on television often fit squarely into the box of hero or villain. Over the past decade, numerous former villains have evolved and even redeemed the past deeds, redeeming themselves to many viewers. But are they truly redeemable? Or are we just blinded by our fandom? As we wrap up The HO for 2017, this is our closing discussion.

Also on this week’s podcast: The Fox and Disney merger is a go, so what does that all mean, everyone is screaming about spoiler, so we settle what a spoiler actually is, reviews of The Greatest Showman and Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, new releases, and our hearts do go on as we discuss a very special significant anniversary!

As the iconic title crawl tells us, The First Order is back on top despite the destruction of Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens. They’re now attempting to eradicate any remnant of The Resistance to gain full control of the galaxy. Rey attempts to convince a calloused, crotchety Luke Skywalker to help aid in the fight, and Poe fights under the command of Leia. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren suffers from his injuries sustained the last time he squared off against Rey. He’s also under the thumb of the mysterious Snoke, who treats him more like a whipped dog than an apprentice. With this setup, Episode VII: The Last Jedi begins!

On this episode, we dive into the biggest film of the year, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There have been many ravings and frustrations over the latest saga in the Star Wars universe, and we are not shying away from any of them. Rey’s journey, Kylo’s plan, Luke’s arc, and what it all means for returning favorites like Poe and Finn.

Nothing is off limits as we discuss what we loved AND loathed about this latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Also joining us, are a few fans with their mini-reviews to showcase a wide range of disruptions in the force.

This is one podcast no Star Wars fan should miss!

Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

  • Rian Johnson’s take on the middle entry in the latest Star Wars saga
  • Each major character and their arc: Rey, Kylo, Finn, Leia, Luke, and more

As DC has struggled on the big screen, they have exceled on television. What you might not know, is that there were numerous attempts at a DC TV universe before Arrow and The Flash. So why didn’t those work? On this week’s podcast, we’re going to dive into this conundrum.

Later, Attorney Gordon Firemark of Entertainment Law Update stops by to discuss the rash of harassment claims upending Hollywood as of late. He takes us through the moral clauses of studio contracts, repercussions for accusers, and what should happen if an entertainer was falsely accused on an indiscretion. You will not want to miss this.

Also on this week’s podcast: Quentin Tarantino wants an R-rated Star Trek, DC Films shakes things up again, spoiler-free reviews of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Disaster Artist, and this episode would not be complete without our Psych the Movie Reactions and Review!

Over 30 years ago, Peter Turner published a memoir on his relationship with screen icon, Gloria Grahame, titled "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool". Unlike most celebrity tales, this was not one rife with scandal or despair. This was a story about love, regret, and kinship. Over 30 years later, Peter's story has finally arrived on the silver screen.

Annette Bening stars as Gloria Grahame, an aging acting icon who learns she is ailing. Rather than suffering alone, she calls on her former love, Peter (Jamie Bell), and requests to stay with him and his family. After taking her in, Peter begins to reflect upon the love they had before, pondering where it all went wrong. And more importantly, where do Gloria and Peter go from here?

For this exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with the director of "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool", Paul McGuigan. He discusses a myriad of topics including why this story felt like one he needed to tell, working with Annette Bening and Jamie Bell, and what it was like having the inspiration for the story readily available. Also, Aaron talks with Peter Turner himself, to get behind the movie magic and discover the love behind the story, and what it is like seeing your own life on the screen.

Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool releases on 12/29 in LA and NY, and the film itself is a beautiful celebration of life and love. And to compliment this tale, enjoy these two interviews with the wonderfully engaging talents of Paul McGuigan and Peter Turner.

Every year, we love to celebrate the holiday season with our listeners, and there is no better way to do that then with our 4th Annual Holiday Special!

It all started with a random idea, as Aaron and Scott were big fans of holiday specials, yet podcasts seemed to skip over the idea completely. Therefore, we decided we can do whatever we want here at The Hollywood Outsider, so let’s create our own tradition and the Annual Holiday Special was born!

We might have taken the week off here from our 2017 Podcast Awards winning show, The Hollywood Outsider, but that does not mean we do not have quality entertainment to offer!

As you traverse the country, hunt for something to deafen family members, or just to ease the chaos of shopping; we have selected three of our most popular topics from earlier this year and combined them into on mammoth episode.

We kick things off with a quick review of Wonder and Radius, followed by those moments when our favorite TV shows jumped the shark. Next up, we discuss what it takes to craft a great season finale. And finally we arrive at the most heroic female characters in film and television.

If you are new to the show, here is a highlight reel of what listeners enjoyed earlier in the year. And if you are a long-time listener, enjoy three of your favorite topics all in one episode!

The Bachelors stars JK Simmons as Bill, a calculus teacher who is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, and mother to their son Wes (Josh Wiggins). The film opens with Bill at his son’s bedside, explaining they need to make a change. So they pick up their life and move to Los Angeles where they begin anew at a private school run by Bill’s old friend, Paul (Kevin Dunn).

Bill and Wes both welcome new women into their lives in the form of Julie Delpy’s French teacher, Carine, and a damaged recluse in Odeya Rush's Lacy. Bill struggles to move on with his life, while Wes desperately wants to live again, and both women play a part in waking them each up to letting go of the past and embracing the moment.

The Bachelors is a very sweet film that takes a look at what happens when two people lose the most important person in their lives. It’s about grief, love, loss, and life.

For this exclusive interview, writer and director Kurt Voelker stops by to discuss his latest film, why the topic spoke to him, keeping grief grounded, and how he came into the stellar cast that makes up his film.

The Bachelors is now available On Demand and in select theaters.

Haze is director David Burkman’s take on fraternity and sorority hazing. Shortly after another pledge has died while being hazed, we follow Nick, a new pledge who takes us through this journey of humiliation, debauchery, and occasionally brotherhood. We also follow Mimi, Nick’s best friend who pledges to the affiliate sorority so she can be closer to Nick. Unlike Nick, this doesn’t mean as much to Mimi, it’s simply a way to keep them together.

The film follows both of them as they engage in numerous obstacles, parties, and even crimes, all while forgetting to handle their studies, and ultimately leads up to Hell Week. Also, Nick’s brother Pete is trying to bust the fraternity doing anything that will bring them down.

For our exclusive interview, writer and Director David Burkman dropped by to break down his new film and why college hazing was such a personal story to tell. We discuss making the film, as well as how realistic many of these hazing rituals actually are. Don't miss Haze, which is now available on VOD and in selected theaters, nor this interview with David Burkman.

In Never HereMireille Enos stars as Miranda Fall, an installation artist who follows, photographs and documents total strangers for her respective pieces. Late one night after a show, her married lover Paul (Sam Shepard in his final role) witnesses a crime outside Miranda’s apartment. She then agrees to cover Paul’s witnessing of the crime as Miranda takes his place. After she partakes in a lineup - where she obviously cannot pick the offender - Miranda follows one of the curious men from the lineup and a new art project begins. As she comes to believe someone is stalking her, she ascertains that it could just be the man she believes to have committed the original crime, or is her own voyeurism finally getting the best of her?

Never Here is a film that wears it's shade of Hitchcock meshed with the more creative aspects of artistic expression proudly on its sleeve. It is very much a thriller, while at the same time serving as a thinking piece on voyeurism and many of our own beliefs that no one's privacy remains secret in this day and age.

Aaron sits down with the writer and director of Never Here, Camille Thoman. Camille has a unique canvas to showcase her film, as the basic construct is that of a thriller, yet there is much more at play here as it bleeds into feelings of paranoia and perhaps even shades of our own voyeuristic guilt. Camille elaborates on this blending of genres, why Mireille was the perfect choice for Miranda, and working with Sam on his final film.

Never Here releases in theaters October 20th, 2017.  Enjoy this exclusive interview with writer and director, Camille Thoman.

What makes a great TV villain? Many believe it is the depths of evil one can go, while others believe it is how shrewdly a character can maneuver within the fabric of society, bending a weaker man’s will to their own.

On this week’s show, we debate who is the greatest villain on television over the last ten years, and many of our selections might just surprise you. Could Joffrey rule them all? Is Boyd Crowder just sly enough to eek out a victory? Ben Linus seems like a sure winner. But can you ever truly count out Rowan Pope? Find out on this week’s podcast, as we arrive at one ultimate winner for the Modern TV Villain Battle Royale!

Also on this week’s podcast: Tomb Raider finally showcases a trailer, Linda Hamilton returns to Terminator, release dates for John Wick and IT sequels, review of Friend Request, upcoming releases including American Made, Flatliners, and Till Death Do Us Part, recommendations, and much more.

After our normal show, we head back to Matthew Vaughn’s hyper-stylized take on spy flicks with Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Does the sequel cash in on the potential from the first film? Was Julianne Moore the right choice for Poppy? Is Eggsy evolving or is Harry weighing him down? We have different opinions on this one, so don’t miss the discussion.

We have all been victims of bad advice from time to time, but movies and television are supposed to be where advice gets it right. They have time, money, and talent to toss out some of the greatest life-changing mantras in history, and we have come to expect greatness.

Unfortunately, that’s simply not the way entertainment works. So this week, we are taking a look at the worst advice in the film and television. Perhaps it was a little nugget of insight that was simply misguided, or maybe it was completely moronic. Regardless, these are the vocal tidbits that caused us to slam our heads against the screen in disbelief.

Also on this week’s podcast: Game of Thrones and HBO need to plug a leak, AMC wants to take on MoviePass, Deadpool 2 loses a stunt person, the New York Post questions if millennials appreciate classics, reviews of The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Logan Luck, Wind River, and much more!

M.F.A. follows Francesca Eastwood’s Noelle, a shy college art student. Attending a campus party, Noelle is raped by a suitor and her life is irrevocably altered. Finding no solace within the school or her friends, she confronts her attacker with tragic results. Noelle is horrified, yet there is something of a tangible relief in knowing that justice has effectively been served. As she summons an emerging strength within, Noelle follows a new path as an avenger of sorts. A vigilante who can punish those who have so casually destroyed lives like hers, all while a detective (Clifton Collins Jr.) nips at her heels.

M.F.A. is screenwriter and producer Leah McKendrick's first feature film, as she continues her quest to build her resume with personal projects. For this exclusive interview, Aaron sits down with Leah to discuss her path to Hollywood as an actress, struggles within the industry, and creating her own opportunities in Hollywood. The conversation then turns to M.F.A. and why this film was such a personal story for Leah, the journey to get the film made, and what she hopes her thoughtful revenge story can accomplish on the topic of rape and sexual assault debates.

You can find more on Leah and her work at LeahMcKendrick.com and the film itself at MFAMovie.com. Look for the film to release this October.

To pay respects to Mr. Romero, we will pay homage to the genre he created, the zombie film. Romero wasn’t the first director to take on the undead in this form, but he was the one who popularized it by setting his horde against the backdrop of societal and systemic issues plaguing us at that time. We discuss the evolution of the zombie craze, its oversaturation, and why it seems to have stuck along far longer than anyone expected.

Also on this week’s podcast: Doctor Who gets a gender swap, Aaron reviews The Big Sick, John takes a look at new releases Dunkirk, Valerian, and Girls Trip, Scott offers a new What’s This Movie and VOD release dates, and Stump the HO makes a triumphant return!

We are deep into the heart of the Summer movie season, and there is no better time than now to dive into those clichés that drive us all nuts.

When we discuss clichés on this episode, that’s both good and bad. Sometimes a cliché can be a positive – things we love and cause a visceral reaction of joy. Other times, well, they’re Batman and Robin. Take a listen to our favorites on both side of that fence, and let us know any we missed in the comments.

Also this week, we debate if R-rated comedies are dying, discuss some significant anniversaries, offer our takes on better endings for favorite television shows, and much more.

After our normal episode, enjoy our Spider-Man: Homecoming reactions and spoilercast, as we try to spin our web-heads around Marvel and Sony’s team-up on everyone’s favorite wall-crawler.

And be sure to vote for us at the Podcast Awards!

The Sabbatical follows James Pittman (James Whittingham), a professor who is forced to produce a photography book on his year off - publish or perish, as they say. With his wife (a charming Bernadette Mullen) busy working on a project of her own and his best friend submerged in family life, he makes fast friends with a carefree artist named Lucy (Laura Abramson). We follow James as he struggles to keep up with a much younger friend, and a mid-life crisis of sorts sets in.

The Sabbatical is a quirky character comedy that has a snarky, curmudgeon leading us through his crisis as he glides along with Lucy's free-spirit lifestyle. It’s a witty and charming ride as you grow to appreciate both characters as they learn a bit more about each other, and James about his own place in the world.

Director Brian Stockton sat down with us to discuss his latest work, and and the unique take he and his fellow filmmakers took to bring The Sabbatical to life. We also discuss his journey in Hollywood, why a mid life crisis is the story he wanted to tell, touring his film in festivals, and much more. You can find more information at TheSabbaticalMovie.com

The Sabbatical is an engaging coming-of-age tale of a man well past his prime. Don't miss our exclusive interview with director, Brian Stockton.

The Sabbatical releases on VOD July 13, 2017. Find more info on the film at TheSabbaticalMovie.com

12 Feet Deep follows Bree and Jonna – sisters with a complicated past – as they meet up at a local indoor pool. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the cover is closed with the sisters inside, trapped until the pool opens again the following morning. Forced to contend with the elements, as well as a custodian with a grudge, the sisters fight together in order to survive a brutal night of possible tragedy.

As Bree and Jonna, Nora-Jane Noone and Alexandra Park carry the weight of this story while navigating a limited opportunity for any physicality in their performances. As the night grows seemingly exponentially longer for the pair, they each elaborate on their respective characterizations in subtly astute ways. A tiny inflection here, a nod to past indiscretions there, each of these descriptive choices combine to form a relationship the audience comes to believe in. After Clara (Diane Farr) enters the picture as a potential linchpin to the duo’s escape, Bree and Jonna finally begin to understand the fundamental strength lying within their relationship.

With 12 Feet Deep, co-writer and director, Matt Eskandari, sought to craft a film that takes a simplistic premise and explores the nuances of the human psyche as it faces certain death. The film is a taut thriller that benefits from both its skilled leads, as well as Matt’s rigid direction. For our interview, Matt discusses where the idea for the film emerged, casting the leads and Tobin Bell, as well as how he managed to create such an entertaining movie despite the obvious challenges of filming primarily in a covered pool.

12 Feet Deep is a harrowing tale from a director with a sharp eye for tension. Take a listen to our exclusive interview with director, Matt Eskandari.

12 Feet Deep is now available on VOD. Find out more at Facebook

In Beauty Mark, Angie is a woman marked by the cruel twists of life. A single mother with a limited education and a long history of bad decisions, Angie struggles to find the right path for her son. Adding to this dilemma is her live-in mother,  a boorish woman with her own track record of irresponsibility. Upon learning that their home is being condemned, Angie sets off on a desperate mission to find a suitable place to live before her family is cast out into the street. When every corner leads to rejection, she fixates her sights on settling the debt with the one person she feels owes her: the man who sexually abused her as a child.

Beauty Mark is an honest depiction of the toll sexual abuse can have on personal judgment. It delivers a protagonist whose plight might seem detestable to some, yet through the raw and unflinching performance of Auden Thornton as Angie, we witness a character whose pain and plight begins to resonate with each of us. Complemented by remarkable supporting performances from Catherine Curtin and Jeff Kober, Beauty Mark is a tragically beautiful tale of the damaged hearts left in the wake of abuse.

For this exclusive interview, writer-director Harris Doran discusses both his journey to Hollywood, as well as the road to Beauty Mark. He elaborates on why the topic of sexual abuse and the need to craft a narrative that spoke a brutal truth was so important in the making of his film. And why Auden Thornton was the perfect choice to bring his powerful tale to light.

A haunting story centered around an uncomfortable topic and filled with memorable performances, don’t miss our exclusive interview with Beauty Mark director, Harris Doran.

Currently playing at the LA Film Festival, you can find more info about Beauty Mark on Facebook or Twitter

Ripped tells the story of two best friends, stoners, who stumble across some of the best kush available on the market. Actually, it’s not “available”, so much as earned. The hook for this particular brand of cannabis is that the CIA somehow harvested it out of somewhere in Area 51. That’s right, this is some top-secret alien weed.

As Harris and Reeves pass out in 1986, they awake 30 years later in the aged forms of Russell Peters and Faizon Love. Life has moved on, and the two friends are forced to confront their missed time by adapting to the leap in technology, opportunities that passed them by, and kicking off their own future. After reuniting with Harris’ long-lost ex (Alex Meneses), the guys decide to reinvest in their favorite pastime and open a restaurant that only serves chili…infused with pot.

For our interview, Ripped director Brad Epstein opens up about his decision to leave the studio exec lifestyle in his own past, and concentrate on his future as a filmmaker. As a producer on films like About a Boy and Dan in Real Life, Brad took a chance with his own career by pursuing Ripped and the world of independent cinema. We also discuss his reasoning for beginning this era of his career with a buddy pot comedy, casting Peters and Love, and where he wants to venture next.

A comedy about best friends coming to terms with the past, and a whole lotta ganja, take a listen to our exclusive interview with Ripped director, Brad Epstein.

Ripped is now available in limited theaters and on VOD. Find out more at RippedMovie.com

Miles tells the story of a young man named Miles who is looking for a way out of his small town. His original plans for a college bound escape are thwarted when his dad suddenly passes away, and Miles and his mother learn that his father had squandered his college fund on a fling. Desperate for a scholarship, Miles signs up for the only sport he’s any good at, volleyball. Of course, with a school that only has a girls volleyball team, this means Miles will need to buck the system and play anyway.

Miles stars Tim Boardman, Molly Shannon, Missi Pyle and Paul Reiser, and is a sweet tale of a kid just trying to leave small town life behind him.

For our exclusive interview, we talk to director Nathan Adloff about leaving his own small town, the journey to get his film made, rounding up his cast, and much more.

Shimmer Lake twists the conventional wisdom of storytelling on its ear by allowing the events of a small-town crime to unfold in reverse order. Working from Friday back to Tuesday, director Oren Uziel constructs a story of despair as a local Sheriff, Zeke Sikes (Benjamin Walker), works to bring to justice three criminals who robbed the local bank. Learning that one of them may just be his brother Andy (Rainn Wilson), Zeke sets off on a trail of lies and murder. With a host of suspects, twists, and revelations, how will this path ultimately lead back to Shimmer Lake?

After graduating with a BA in Drama from Duke University and an MFA in Acting from the Yale School of Drama, Adam Saunders set his sights on a career in Hollywood. As the pursuit of his craft intensified, Adam found he also had a knack for both developing and producing projects. Often the unsung hero of film, a producer fields many behind-the-scenes responsibilities that directly contribute to our favorite films, from lining up capital and casting commitments to finalizing distribution deals.

As the CEO of Footprint Features, Adam produced Shimmer Lake and explains why this was “one the best scripts I’ve ever read”. He also elaborates on the complexities of shooting a film in reverse order, assembling the all-star cast, and how their deal with Netflix ultimately came to fruition.

Footprint Features has several exciting projects lined up, not the least of which is the newly released Shimmer Lake. Don’t miss this exclusive interview with producer, Adam Saunders.

For decades, strong female characters have continued to grow in popular culture. Heroines have graced the silver screen from Ellen Ripley to Katniss Everdeen to the just released Wonder Woman. Likewise, television has held its own legion of women in the forms of the Bionic Woman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Sydney Bristow. Heroism lies in everyone, but this week we’re only discussing the ladies.

On this week’s podcast, we discuss what it takes to be a hero. Is it selflessness, bravery, or just an epic level of ass-kickery? We also offer up our individual picks for the top 3 heroic female characters in TV and film.

Also this week: reviews of Wonder Woman, The Wedding Invitation, and War Machine. We also offer another installment of HO Court as we look into recent litigation regarding a lawsuit claiming the recent Alamo Drafthouse “Women’s Only” screenings is discrimination.

She elaborates on what prompted her to craft this story of sisterhood and women making the first move, and why the actors were such a fit for Rainy's passion project.

Be Afraid follows John and Heather Chambers (Brian Krause, Jaimi Paige), shortly after relocating to a small town in Pennsylvania. After he initially seems to experience sleep paralysis, John begins to discover that his home is being targeted by ominous beings lurking in the shadows, seemingly led by a nefarious figure known only as The Hat Man. Fearing for his family's safety, John dives into a complex history of mysterious local disappearances which may lead to a secret this town never wants revealed.

Drew Gabreski's latest film, Be Afraid, carries with it an intriguing concept revolving around the deep history and lore of "shadow people". This phenomenon - which revolves around those unique moments when we catch a flicker of movement in the corner of our eye only to discover nothing is present - continues to grow around the world. Skeptics believe these "shadows" are mere flights of an overactive imagination, while more open-minded intellectuals theorize they could be anything from ghosts to interdimensional beings to even time travelers.

Whatever they are, as he discusses in our exclusive interview, Drew was directly affected by visions of a so-called "Hat Man" as a child. These memories prompted him to work with screenwriter Gerald Nott on a shared vision of how a story in this world could be brought to life on film. Drew elaborates on those experiences, as well as the journey the film took from the initial stages at After Dark to its current release on VOD.

An intriguing interview with a new talent on-the-rise, take a listen to our interview with director, Drew Gabreski.

Be Afraid releases digitally and On Demand June 1, 2017.

Television shows, unlike podcasts, typically cannot run all year long. Therefore, at the end of every season, we are graced with what’s known as the “Season Finale”, that last episode that is supposed to both complete the current year, while also teasing next year’s storyline.

Sometimes these season finales work, often times they leave us throwing darts at our TV sets. So this week, we decided to break down what makes for a great season finale, as well as what our all-time favorite for a season ender is.

We also discuss our most annoying TV clichés, what college movie parties we wish we were invited to, and even some movie news.

Ya know who always gets the shaft when we’re talking about movie heroes? Sidekicks. That’s right, those rough-and-tumble heroes and heroines who might not have the title of the film, but they help save the world just the same. Through their own toughness, nobility, sometimes even flippant disdain for protocol, these are the ones who keep our heroes honest.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 finally hitting theaters, we felt now is the perfect time for our latest Movie Battle Royale! So we dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and debate who is ultimately the greatest sidekick to compliment the heroes of the MCU. Black Widow? Vision? Rocket Raccoon? Eight sidekicks enter our ring this week, and only one will emerge as the Greatest Sidekick EVER!

Later on in the show, we also discuss our personal picks for movies this summer. From Most Anticipated Overall to Most Anticipated Disappointment, these are our the films we’re most excited and terrified for.

If The Fast and the Furious series has taught us anything, it’s that film buffs love some mindless action.

On this episode of our podcast, we discuss some of our favorite insane action sequences, those scenes that test the very limits of physics and common sense. Whether it be sports cars bringing down a jumbo jet, of John McClane taking one down with a lighter, it’s time to examine just how crazy we like our wanton destruction.

After the normal show, we dive into our reactions on the latest adventures of Dominic Toretto and family in The Fate of the Furious.

13 Reasons Why is the new Netflix series based on Jay Asher’s book revolving around Hannah Baker, a teenager who commits suicide. Unlike so many suicides where we never know the whys, Hannah left behind tapes where she detailed the 13 reasons, and those responsible, for her taking her own life. The series follows Clay Jensen, who receives the box of tapes and proceeds to listen to them, one episode at a time, trying to piece together what happened.

We will be going into spoilers for this episode, so please come back to us if you have not already completed the show.

We discuss the themes the show presents and why think the series is resonating with so many people.

Thirteen Thoughts on 13 Reasons Why

  1. Let’s talk about this concept, a suicide where we learn the reasons why through audio tapes left behind by the deceased
  2. Differences between the book and the series
  3. Hannah Baker downward spiral and Kathryn Langford’s portrayal | Is it wrong to legitimately miss a fictional character?
  4. Was it right for her to assign blame in this way, did all of these characters deserve this?
  5. Clay Jenson and Dylan Minnette’s portrayal
  6. He seemed to be on a crusade for justice, while these tapes crushed him emotionally. Was that fair or too much for Hannah to put this on him?
  7. Where the hell did Tony keep coming from, does he ever actually attend class?
  8. Remaining standouts from the characters / cast
  9. Do you feel like it accurately captured mental health issues such as depression and suicide appropriately, some people feel very strongly both ways?
  10. Rumors, cyber shaming and bullying, rape. This was a lot for one person to endure, was it a fair representation of the modern teenage existence?
  11. If this were real, and I feel like so many people are treating it like it is, what could Hannah Baker have done differently? Would one person make a difference like her tapes implies?
  12. How the season ends / loose threads

13. Do you want another season, if so, how would you want to see it?

Jumping the shark is a term that has been around for decades. Originating in the fifth season premiere of Happy Days, where the character of Fonzie water skis and literally jumps over a shark, the term has come to define that moment of ludicrous insanity where a TV show takes a turn it can never recover from.

For this episode, we take a look at when some of our favorite television shows made that turn. Some might surprise you, while others you will see coming a mile away. It’s a fun discussion on a topic that never seems to go out of style.

Television is nothing like it used to be.

Many of us remember the days of rabbit ears, three channels, and the American Anthem sign-off every night at midnight. Maybe we grew up with All in the Family, Good Times, Miami Vice, Family Ties, Cheers, Friends, The X-Files, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Whatever time period you are from, do you remember what TV was like back then?

On this week’s episode, we look back at the television of our childhood, as well as how we do TV now. From 3 channels and limited options, to just too much TV to even contemplate, we are cracking open Pandora’s Box and peeking inside. This is a dose of nostalgia you won’t want to miss!

M.F.A. follows Francesca Eastwood’s Noelle, a shy college art student.

M.F.A. is director Natalia Leite's follow-up to her debut feature, Bare. Written by Leah McKendrick, M.F.A. is a psychological thriller by structure, while offering a palette with which Leite and her team can explore deeper themes of campus sexual assault, the PTSD victims often succumb to after their trauma, advocacy, and even the discrepancies of consent. Francesca Eastwood maneuvers the many facets of Noelle with breathless ease and determination, and by the film's conclusion, the audience is spurred into discussion.

For our exclusive interview with Natalia, we discuss a wide array of topics. Beginning with her first realization that filmmaking was in her future, we lead into the more complicated aspects of Natalia's film, sexual assault treated as a plot device in modern film, production woes, and what she hopes to accomplish once M.F.A. reaches distribution.

You can find more on Natalia and her work at NataliaLeite.com and the film itself at MFAMovie.com

Here Alone follows Ann (Lucy Walters), a young woman forced into solace as society has been nearly wiped out due to an unforeseen plague. With a risk of infection surrounding her, Ann cements her position deep in the woods, cutting herself off from human contact. After a chance encounter with an injured man, Chris (Adam David Thompson) and his companion Olivia (Gina Piersanti), Ann must decide if she will remain in hiding, or if fate will force her hand.

In the Tribeca Audience Award winning Here Alone, director Rod Blackhurst downplays post-apocalyptic horror and instead focuses on characters. Specifically the choices a person will make when all reason has seemingly vanished from sight. For our exclusive interview, Rod discusses his previous work on the Amanda Knox documentary, harsh production elements endured throughout, identifying Lucy Walters as the perfect Ann, and why this was a story he needed to tell. Don’t miss this engaging interview with a director on-the-rise!

Here Alone arrives in theaters and on VOD March 31, 2017

Aliens come in all shapes and sizes. Some are cute, cuddly and love Reese’s Pieces. Others drool acid, want nothing more than to destroy humanity and frankly, they ain’t got time to bleed.  Ack, ack, ack.

Our latest Movie Battle Royale centers on the latter, the most dangerous aliens EVER in film. Eight specific species enter our ring, but only one can emerge the most deadly in film history. Who will the winner be? There’s only one way to find out.

Not only do we settle the alien debate once and for all, we also review several new films (including Life and Power Rangers), discuss the career of Jim Carrey, and a lot of exciting news in the world of film.

The films discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Podcast:

Title Synopsis
Walking Out David, 14, city mouse of a kid, travels to rural Montana for his annual hunting trip with Cal, 40, his lonely, estranged “off-the-grid” father. As they ascend deep into the woods, Cal teaches David about predators and prey, fathers and sons, the past and the increasingly complicated present. An encounter with a bear cub results in serious injuries to both David and Cal. After futile attempts to hike out together, David resolves to carry his father on his back to safety while simultaneously healing his broken spirit. "Walking Out" is an intimate epic, a relentlessly primal, fiercely rawboned tale of connection, survival and the true path to manhood.
The Transfiguration An official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, writer/director Michael O’Shea’s debut feature “The Transfiguration” follows troubled teen Milo who hides behind his fascination with vampire lore. When he meets the equally alienated Sophie, the two form a bond that begins to challenge Milo’s dark obsession, blurring his fantasy into reality. A chilling portrait of violence, “The Transfiguration” is an atmospheric thriller set against the grit of New York City.
This Is Your Death Today’s audience has become infatuated with watching others degrade themselves on national television. They crave a wild argument, a bloody fight, or a publicized scandal. It has become the ultimate source of entertainment. But when the boundaries seem like they can’t be pushed any further, game-show host Adam Rogers steps in to break down the wall by hosting a new game show where contestants end their lives for a chance to win money. Adam will only be satisfied if his reality show is number one in the ratings, and he’ll stop at nothing to make sure he gets there, even if it means letting go of his humanity.
Small Town Crime Ex-cop Mike Kendall (John Hawkes) discovers the body of a young woman and, in an act of self-redemption, becomes hellbent on finding the killer. While his un-couth and quirky detective style helps break open the case, his dogged determination unwittingly puts his sister (Octavia Spencer) and best friend (Anthony Anderson) in danger. Additional cast members include Robert Forster, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Vartan, James Lafferty, Daniel Sunjata, Caity Lotz, Jeremy Ratchford, Don Harvey, Stefanie Scott and Dale Dickey.
Win It All Jake Johnson stars as small time gambler Eddie Garrett, who agrees to watch a duffel bag for an acquaintance who is heading to prison. When he discovers cash in the bag, he’s unable to resist the temptation and winds up deeply in debt. When the prison release is shortened, Eddie suddenly has a small window of time to win all the money back.
Going to Brazil Four childhood friends are reunited at a wedding in Rio. But when they accidentally kill a young man during a party that gets out of hand, they are forced to flee the city in a crazy adventure that takes them from the favelas to the posh embassies, from the beaches to the rainforest, and is filled with caipirinhas, guns and bikinis.
Hounds of Love In suburban Perth during the mid 1980s, people are unaware that women are disappearing at the hands of serial killers John and Evelyn White. After an innocent lapse in judgment, Vicki Maloney is randomly abducted by the disturbed couple. With her murder imminent, Vicki realizes she must find a way to drive a wedge between Evelyn and John if she is to survive. Hounds of Love is an exercise in expertly-crafted tension, offering a bold, challenging debut from writer/director Ben Young.
Prevenge A pitch black, wryly British comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe, "Prevenge" follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree that’s as funny as it is vicious. It's her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth's actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood. "Prevenge" marks the directorial debut from Lowe, who is a triple threat, writing, directing, and acting in the film during her own pregnancy.
Goran Goran lives a simple life surrounded by his friends and family in the snow-covered Croatian highlands. This carefree existence is put to an end when his wife announces she is expecting a child. Whereas they have every reason to celebrate, the good news will unleash the fiery personalities of the highlanders, leading to a darkly comic twist of events. The white winter will soon turn red.
Colossal Gloria is an out-of-work party girl who, after getting kicked out of her apartment by her boyfriend, is forced to leave her life in New York and move back to her hometown. When news reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, South Korea, Gloria gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this far-off phenomenon. As events begin to spin out of control, Gloria must determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
Fits & Starts David Warwik is a struggling writer who has been toiling away at the same novel for years. His wife Jennifer is a hot young literary figure, who has just released a new masterpiece. When her publisher invites the couple to an artists' salon at his home in Connecticut, the pair embark on a twisted journey, and David must face his demons and try to “not be weird” among the waspy salon guests and competitive art set in attendance. He encounters a dentist with publishing aspirations, a book critic full of condescending advice, a fellow writer who may know his wife a little too well, an old “friend," and a high powered bipolar literary agent who just might be able to help him...for a price.
Like Me After posting a video of herself robbing a convenience store, Kiya amasses a huge social media following. A reckless loner, she seeks some form of genuine human connection. Through her travels, she encounters a drifter, an Internet troll and a paint huffing outsider who are all pulled into her circle of chaos, junk food, and drugs. In a world of fabricated personalities, Kiya is intent on exposing something gutturally truthful about humanity, but ultimately, she must confront herself.
Dara Ju Seyi, a 24-year-old Nigerian-American, works on Wall Street. Desperate to succeed because of his outsider status—due to class and race—he commits a crime, insider trading, which brings his entire world crashing down on him. Seyi’s troubled circumstances force him finally to confront his tumultuous relationship with his ailing father, his romantic relationship with his privileged white girlfriend, and his racial and immigrant backgrounds—with nothing less at stake for him than his soul.
M. F. A. An art student struggling with creativity is violently raped by a fellow classmate. After attempting the traditional routes to cope with her trauma, she impulsively confronts her attacker - a decision that has deadly repercussions. Her world is turned upside down as a chilling reality is uncovered: she is one of many silenced sexual assault survivors on campus. A vigilante is born- retribution is the inspiration she's been waiting for.
A Critically Endangered Species The story of the final weeks leading up to the disappearance (and presumable death) of Maya Dardel, an internationally respected poet and novelist who lived, until 2016, in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Maya announces on National Public Radio that she is going to end her life and that young male writers may compete to become executor of her estate. The man who wins will inherit Maya’s home, land, books, unpublished manuscripts, and be expected to protect and promote her posthumous reputation.
Most Beautiful Island "Most Beautiful Island" is a psychological thriller examining the plight of undocumented female immigrants hoping to make a life in New York. Shot on Super 16 with an intimate, voyeuristic sensibility, "Most Beautiful Island" chronicles one harrowing day in the life of Luciana, a young immigrant woman struggling to make ends meet while striving to escape her past. As Luciana's day unfolds, she is whisked, physically and emotionally, through a series of troublesome, unforeseeable extremes. Before her day is done, she inadvertently finds herself a central participant in a cruel game. Lives are placed at risk, while psyches are twisted and broken for the perverse entertainment of a privileged few.
The Ballad of Lefty Brown Lefty Brown is a 63 year old sidekick. Loyal, crotchety and rarely taken seriously, he’s ridden with Western legend Eddie Johnson for his entire adult life. Now Johnson has been appointed Senator of Montana, and despite the objections of his spirited wife Laura, he plans to leave Lefty in charge of his ranch. But when a rustler kills Johnson, Lefty is forced from his partner’s shadow. Devastated by guilt, he sets out on a journey that will reunite him with old friends US Marshall Tom Harrah and Governor James Bierce as he confronts the ugly realities of frontier justice.
Us and Them With it’s raw energy and stream of consciousness plot, "Us and Them" is a backlash against the drone of British period dramas. Danny is an ordinary working class kid who is tired of the rough deal he faces. His plan? To start a revolution by streaming attacks against the one percent on the web. His goal? To terrify the elite into bringing about change. Writer/director Joe Martin taps into his blue collar roots to capture the zeitgeist of outsider politics that have gripped the western world. In "Us and Them" he lays bare the inequality and anger that wrong footed the media and led to the shock events of Brexit and Trump’s victory.
Atomic Blonde The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.
Baby Driver A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
Free Fire Bold, breathless and wickedly fun, "Free Fire" is an electrifying action comedy about an arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Acclaimed filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise) propels the audience head-on into quite possibly the most epic shootout ever seen on film as he crafts a spectacular parody –– and biting critique –– of the insanity of gun violence. Everyone’s got a gun, and absolutely no one is in control. Packed with witty one-liners, flamboyant characters and remarkable feats of cinematic gunplay, Free Fire is a full-throttle action extravaganza that keeps things fresh and fun with Wheatley’s alternately buoyant and savage sense of humor.

In 1991, Disney introduced a tale as old as time to the world in the form of the animated classic, Beauty and the Beast. 26 years later, they're at it again as they return to their recent successes with live-action remakes. Emma Watson stars as Belle and Dan Stevens stars as the Beast in this modern spin on the timeless story.

Be our guest for this special episode of our podcast, as we discuss what we loved about this latest interpretation, as well as what simply did not work. The computer imagery, production, additional music and score - everything is on the table.

As Marvel has also released their latest Defenders-related series, we also discuss Iron Fist. From the negative critical reaction to where it's all leading, and is this even a series worth investing in?

While many of us watch movies to avoid the need for actual reading, there’s a cornucopia of films out there that we have to watch with subtitles to understand what’s going on with the plot. We welcome special guest, Shawn Fuller (from "The Horribly Awkward Podcast") to discuss our willingness, or lack thereof, to sit through a movie where we have to pay attention to those pesky words at the bottom of the screen. We even share in some of our favorite non-English speaking movies.

We’re also still talking about Batman, despite the fact that we’re a long ways away from filming, as well as the theatrical release of an upcoming Netflix movie from the director of “Snowpiercer”. Also, are you confused about the possibility of a sequel to “Gladiator”? We sure are, but that doesn’t stop us from talking about that crazy idea from Ridley Scott. And speaking of sequels, we’re finally getting the follow-up to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, but we’re unsure how we feel about the casting possibilities.

For far too long, our favorite television universes have roamed around, searching for answers. So what if we gave them a bit of a hand? What if we dropped a prominent movie character into a TV universe to settle the chaos or fix the problem? How would we do that, exactly? Lend us your ears, because you’re about to find out!

We also discuss the Beloit Film Fest and what is has to offer, Tron and Overboard reboots, and tackle some community questions. What to know what movies shame us the most? How about the grossest thing we’ve ever witnessed at the theater? And how did we end up with Miles Teller: Movie Assassin?!

Television has killed more beloved characters than most world wars, yet we continue to watch and admire the sheer brutality. But not every character death is a punch to the gut. Occasionally, it becomes a moment of celebration and joy.

This week, we’re discussing TV character deaths we cheered for. Those beloved characters that either deserved every second of pain they received, or they just annoyed us so much we had to see them go. It’s time to celebrate death!

Also, stay after our regular episode as we have a spoiler-filled discussion on John Wick: Chapter Two.

While billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is forced to deal with the envy of the many women who came before her, including a stalker with violent tendencies and the very woman who first taught Christian his dominate ways, Elena Lincoln (Kim Basinger).

Even though we are not the target demographic, for this special Reactions Podcast, Aaron, Scott and John decided to descend into Christian’s Red Room and see what it is about this series that drives audiences wild. THIS is our very adult-oriented look at Fifty Shades Darker.

Directed by Thomas Zellen, Beyond The Edge stars Sean Maher as Dr. Abe Anderson, a scientist recruited for a long mission into space with Casper Van Dien accompanying him as Lt. Colonel Harold Richards. Their mission is simple, take a ship propelled by theoretical physics to the far edge of the universe…and see what’s out there.

As Abe and Richards each deal with depression and isolation during their decade-plus mission, when they finally reach the edge, their perceptions and realities of the universe are challenged.

Many of you know Sean Maher as Simon Tam from Firefly and Serenity, Sean has had an extensive career in Hollywood. He left New York for L.A. when he landed the lead role in the Fox series, Ryan Caulfield: Year One. That lead to many parts in shows like Party of Five, The Playboy Club and many more. Lately, he’s also been voicing the character of Nightwing in several DC animated films.

For this interview, Sean stopped by to discuss his career and specifically this latest film, Beyond the Edge (formally known as ISRA 88), which arrives on video on demand from Screen Media Films on February 7th. The film is a very existential look at these two characters, but primarily Maher’s Abe Anderson, and leaves you with a quite a bit to debate as you reach the conclusion.

Take a listen to our exclusive interview with Sean Maher.

This week, we discuss our perfect movies gone wrong. Those films that just failed after so much promise, as well as listener picks for movies they think failed them.

Director Aram Rappaport sits down with Aaron to discuss his new film, The Crash, starring Frank Grillo and Minnie Driver. From concept to execution, this is intriguing interview with an up-and-coming director.

The Crash, now on Video On Demand, stars Frank Grillo as Guy Clifton, a very intelligent man who manipulated the US financial system for his own gain, only to get busted and is now facing serious jail time. When the US government realizes there is an impending breach by cyber-terrorists that could crash the system, they agree to bring in Guy and his team of hackers and programmers to thwart the attack before it ruins America. The film also stars Minnie Driver as his business savvy wife, dealing with both her husband’s possible prison sentence as well as her daughter’s serious medical affliction.

The one very distinct difference between The Crash and other thrillers in this genre is that Guy Clifton is no hero, he’s selfish, and has manipulated his way to the top. And the only people he seems to respect are his family, who also end up wearing the burden of his sins.
