How many times have we been enjoying a movie or a television series, when something insane happens that glues us to the screen…only to then realize we’ve been duped by yet another useless dream sequence? This week, we’re putting the issue of if we really need dream sequences to bed.

That’s not all. Also this week, Aaron recounts his recent media visit at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the very real potential for an eventual visit to Mars, we craft our own perfect Ghostbusters team, and close the show with a very personal announcement from one of our founding members.

A hook is described as the nucleus of both a film and its screenplay. It is what grabs the viewer's attention, preferably in the first 5–10 minutes, as a reader might expect to find a literary hook in the first chapter of a novel. For this episode, we discuss our favorite movie or television hooks, and why they appeal to us.

One of our most popular topics is our Movie Battle Royale. Eight great movies walk into the ring, eight favorites or classics. We then begin the process of voting for what is the best of the best, until we are left with one. Final. Champion. The greatest film of that genre in the known HO universe.

This week, we tackle Alien Invasion movies. Those films that trigger some of our worse fears, that aliens are coming to Earth…and they are not here for peace. What could the greatest invasion film be? Could it be Independence Day, maybe Pacific Rim, how about Men in Black or War of the Worlds? This week, all bets are off as we settle this debate once and for all.

What is it about haunted houses that terrify us to the very core? Is it the idea that something has taken up residence in our home and we are powerless to stop it? Or is that we just shake in our boots at the thought of ghosts in general?

We take haunted houses to task on this week’s episode for all the years of torture, getting down to the spine-tingling truth of it all. We also share our thoughts on what is the most horrifying house in the supernatural cinematic universe.

X-Men: Apocalypse begins in 3600 BC, as En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse, as we come to know him) is attempting to move his consciousness and powers to a new body, one that possesses the power of rapid healing, so that it can be added to his collection of abilities. While this happens he is to be protected by his four greatest warriors who unfortunately fail, but not before the transition is complete just as the ceremony chamber collapses into the earth. After a few thousand years, stupid men dig him up and unleash upon Earth...well, the Apocalypse. One which only our beloved gaggle of X-Men can help avert.

This special episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast is dedicated to Bryan Singer's fourth and latest go-round at mutant history as he takes on his most challenging film and foe yet. Where does it end up in the lexicon of Marvel's X-Men films? Did it deserve the critical lashing many have given it? Is Apocalypse everything it could have been? We discuss this film in detail, both spoiler-free and aplenty, so don't miss our X-Men: Apocalypse Reactions Podcast.

Over the course of cinema history, there have been more than a few missteps in terms of casting. Whether it’s a starring or supporting role, which actor plays the part is almost as integral to a film’s success as the story or the special effects. It only takes one bad choice to completely derail a film.

This week we take a look at the worst of the worst in movie casting mistakes. From Anakin Skywalker to Genghis Khan, we run the gamut on the bad decisions Hollywood sometimes forces on us as we each pick our 3 worst movie casting decisions.

Do you remember that song from that one movie? The one that came on the radio as soon as you left the theater, causing you to crank the dial all the way up, drop the windows down and scream out of your window in the vicinity of random strangers?

THAT’S the song we’re talking about this week, as we dive into what we consider to be the greatest original film song of all-time. Is it Purple Rain? Maybe Danger Zone? How about Goldfinger?

Grab that broom handle and bring your vocal stylings along for a trip down memory lane as we determine our personal favorites and even whip up a movie soundtrack of our lives.

Don’t you love it when you are watching your favorite television show, and your favorite character gets him or herself into a predicament that you just know they will wiggle themselves out of…and then they DIE?!

Oh, we’ve all been there. The RAGE that seeps through your pores, the visceral reaction to the fact that a character you have spent tens of hours becoming attached to has just been forever ripped away from your heart.

Is it fair? Is it right? Most importantly, is television getting carried away with it?

Disney has been the crown jewel of animation for decades, providing family after family with countless hours of laughter, heart, and joy. Beginning with Snow White, Walt Disney began a legacy that remains unrivaled, and this week, The Hollywood Outsider celebrates his legacy.

This week’s topic brings back one of our most popular segments: The Movie Battle Royale! 8 movies enter our cinematic ring of fire, and only can leave the Champion of the HO Universe. This time, we took on an impossible task and broke down our all-time favorite Disney animated classics to eight final films, and only the classic hand-drawn animation are allowed this week.

Will it be Beauty and the Beast? Cinderella? The Lion King? Aladdin? Bambi? Only one film will survive this edition of The Movie Battle Royale!

It seems like things keep going darker these days, and even Disney animated films like Zootopia are tackling harsh topics like diversity. Meanwhile Star Wars, Marvel and DC pump out numerous films that the entire family goes to where there is constant wanton destruction.

That brings us to our topic – What constitutes a family film in 2016?

When you take the kids, mom, grandma, whomever – What does family film even mean in the modern day? Is it relegated to films of yesterday like Old Yeller, or is it anything the entire family can enjoy, regardless of topic or rating? We dive into this and it spurs a spirited discussion on films in general.

Bruce Wayne has been personally affected by the effects of Man of Steel, so much so that he worries about Superman's legacy on our planet. As he grows increasingly leery of Superman's role on Earth as an almost God-like figure, he decides to take matters into his own hands, showing a God what it feels like to be a man. At the same time, Lex Luthor has burst on the scene with a mysterious agenda that will affect both of our heroes.

For this special bonus episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we dive head-first into the world of Batman v Superman. From the rooftops of Gotham to the streets of Metroplis to the slow-motion of Zack Snyder, we discuss every aspect of the film, including where we think the series should go from here. The South by Southwest Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Every year, thousands of fans arrive in Downtown Austin, TX to partake in a couple of weeks of great music, technology, and film. For this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we take you deep into the heart of the film festival portion, and even deeper into the films themselves.

There are well over 100 films, documentaries, and shorts at SXSW and - while we can't see them all - we have a nice sample of what came out of this year's stellar lineup of independent films. 17 movies and TV shows are on the docket, and we review them all...with more than a couple surprises.

So sit back and relax. You're about to experience South by Southwest from the comfort of your own chair.

The films discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie Podcast:

Beware the Slenderman: On May 31st 2014, in the woods outside Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls stabbed their classmate 19 times. This is a documentary covering those events and the evolution of Slenderman.

Black: A 15-year-old girl in a black gang in Brussels must choose between loyalty and love when she falls for a Moroccan boy from a rival gang. Keenly aware of the consequences of getting involved with someone from another gang, they begin to imagine a different life for themselves when things go wrong. It's in this criminal milieu that directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah set Black, a pulse-pounding contemporary take on Shakespearean tragedy Romeo & Juliet.

The Trust: Nic Cage and Elijah Wood play a pair of cops investigating a drug invasion stumble upon a mysterious bank vault.

American Fable: When 11-year-old Gitty discovers that her beloved father is hiding a wealthy man in her family's silo in order to save their struggling farm, she is forced to choose between saving the man's life or protecting her family from the consequences of their actions. AMERICAN FABLE is a fairytale thriller set in the 1980s rural Midwest about a courageous girl living in a dark - sometimes magical - world.

Claire In Motion: Claire (Betsy Brandt) is sure of herself, her work and family, until - like a bad dream - her husband disappears, leaving a trail of puzzling secrets that shatter her certainty.

And Punching The Clown: Hapless satirical songwriter Henry Phillips is lured to LA when a veteran TV producer decides to make a show about the life of a loser.

Miss Stevens: A comedy focused on a teacher who chaperones a group of high schoolers to a state drama competition.

I Am Not A Serial Killer: In a small Midwestern town, a troubled teen with homicidal tendencies must hunt down and destroy a supernatural killer whilst keeping his own inner demons at bay.

Demolition: Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a successful investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash.

In A Valley Of Violence: A revenge Western film set in the 1890s, where a stranger (Ethan Hawke) arrives in a small town seeking vengeance for his murdered friend.

Don’t Breathe: A group of teens break into a blind man's (Stephen Lang) home thinking they'll get away with the perfect crime. They're wrong.

Secrets of the Force Awakens: An inside look at the making of the movie Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), featuring footage and exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers.

The Waiting: A pair of high school kids try to trick an elderly neighbor (James Caan) into thinking his house is haunted.

Before The Sun Explodes: After his wife kicks him out, an anxious comedian is lured in by an intriguing woman with a stalker.

Preacher: After a supernatural event at his church a preacher enlists the help of a vampire to find God.

Outcast: A young man searches for answers as to why he's been suffering from supernatural possessions his entire life.

Everybody Wants Some: A group of college baseball players navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.

Crazy is one of the hardest words to define, mostly because it means so many different things to so many people. What unnerves one of us might not even bother another, while society might consider a certain behavior insane while we completely understand it. So what IS crazy to us?

When it comes to movies and television, there are numerous characters to consider and we could honestly spend hours just on this one topic. Instead, this episode we discuss what WE consider to be crazy behavior, and what kinds of behavior truly gets under our skin unlike any other.

We conclude this topic by picking the one character in allllllll of TV and film that we consider to be the craziest crazy of all the crazies. That one character who still haunts us to this very day.

We’ve all been there. You walk out of the theater, pumped and excited from the movie you just sat through. You go on with your life until, suddenly, BAM! A sequel is announced. A continuation of this world or character that you loved is coming back to a theater near you. So you grab your closest friends, you psych yourself up and get ready for what is surely the greatest motion picture in the history of cinema!

And then it’s not.

That’s right, on this week’s podcast, we’re discussing when movie sequels go wrong. When that next chapter in your favorite film franchise forgets its roots or fans and turns into something dreadful. When you say ‘Bad Sequel’, so many films come to mind: Batman and Robin, Speed 2, Jaws 2, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, The Phantom Menace, and the list goes on and on.

What were our worst personal experiences because of bad sequels? What sequels ruined entire franchises for us? Most importantly: What are the absolute WORST movie sequels?

What are we up to? About 412 comic book superhero origin films? It sure feels like it. Every other month, it seems we are treated to another fanciful tale of some down-on-their-luck do-gooder, who randomly stumbles upon a radiated spider or blueprints to a super-suit, and BAM! Now we have us a superhero!

With so many films on this topic, the question must be asked: Which one is The Best? Of every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Comics, or other publisher – which movie rises above all of their foes to become the greatest origin story for a superhero throughout the history of time itself?!

Thankfully, The Hollywood Outsider has heard your cries for a ruling on this topic. Therefore, for this episode of our podcast, we have setup yet another Movie Battle Royale. This time, 8 movies enter the ring, but only ONE will be crowned the Champion of the HOverse. Could it be the original Superman? Maybe Batman Begins or Spider-Man? What if we just went crazy and proclaimed Hellboy or Spawn the winner? There is only want way to find out, you’re not going to want to miss this podcast!

Police Officers, Federal Agents, Air Marshals – Television and Film are stuffed to the gills with lawmen doing all measures of things in the name of Justice. We have all watched a TV series or a movie and thought – Can a cop REALLY do that? Can they really search a criminal’s car without good reason? Can a Fed claim jurisdiction over a local Sheriff? Most importantly – Can a cop shoot a guy one day and be back on the street the very next day without even filing a report?!

These questions and more are about to finally be laid to rest as we bring in a special guest this week with over 20 years of experience in Law Enforcement to settle these debates once and for all!

Not only do we handle that topic, some upcoming releases, AND discuss some movie and TV news – Stick with us until the very end for our in-depth reactions to the latest Marvel juggernaut: Deadpool. What did we think of the ‘Merc With A Mouth’? Did he live up to lofty expectations? Has the world gone mad for a madman? Will we get an R-rated Wolverine movie because of all of this?

The Challenger, now on VOD and DVD, tells the story of Jaden, a down-on-his-luck man looking to find his way in the world. He turns to a boxing trainer, played by Michael Clarke Duncan in his last role, to teach him how to be both the boxer and man he believes he can be.

Kent Moran directed and stars in the film, and here he sits down with Aaron to discuss his film, what it was like writing and directing, as well as working with Duncan.

The X-Files has returned to our television screens after over a decade away, so what did we think of Mulder and Scully's long-awaited return? In this special episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we begin with what we loved about the original, ground-breaking series - including favorite episodes, why David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are perfect partners, and what got us hooked to begin with. Then we merge naturally to this latest telling of our favorite paranormal supercops and where Chris Carter decided to take the story this time, especially that HUGE twist on the original's lore.

The Truth Is In Here.

Our topic this week: With all of the controversy this year, is it time to fix The Oscars?

The Oscars have always been the premiere awards event, the best of the best, the most prestigious award in entertainment is The Academy Award. This year’s nominees have arrived not with excitement and elation, but with vitriol and controversy. For the 2nd year in a row, not a single actor of color was nominated for an acting award. But is that because of blatant racism, like many involved with the #OscarsSoWhite movement claim, or is it simply because those were the best performances of the year? We take a look at this divisive topic, in our own special way.

Discussed on this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie and TV Podcast:

  • (0:00 – 25:54) Movie and TV News: Do we need more origin stories from aging heroes, Laurel and Hardy get a biography, Star Wars gets a release date shift, and much more | Trailer discussion on Suicide Squad, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and 10 Cloverfield Lane
  • (25:55 – 1:28:56) From The Outside In Topic: Is it time to fix the Oscars? | Listener topic comments
  • (1:28:57 – 1:53:08) What’s This Movie? | Reviews of Ride Along 2, Naz and Maalik, The X-Files Premiere and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi | Upcoming Attractions The 5th Wave, The Boy and Dirty Grandpa | VOD and Blu-Ray Releases
  • (1:53:09 – 2:03:15) Emails | Closing
  • (2:03:16 – 2:11:51) Goodbye, Alan Rickman

Naz and Maalik is the story of two Muslim black youths who also happen to be closeted gay men, and whose antics have drawn the attention of a local FBI agent. The film unfolds casually as we follow Naz and Maalik and learn the pieces of their story as we go.

The film takes a very simple approach to a complicated subject, instead of hammering you over the head with a myriad of social issues, director Jay Dockendorf lets the film play out naturally over the course of an entire day. There are no dire moments of senseless violence or sudden acts of heinous hatred – this is a film meant to leave you with your own thoughts on the story.

The film is available Jan 26th on VOD and DVD. Listen now to our interview with Jay Dockendorf.

Our topic this week: When is it time to admit our favorite films don’t hold up, and we are just blinded by nostalgia? SO many of our favorite films are having pinnacle anniversaries, but are they really as good as we remember them? Or are we all just wearing rose-colored glasses? We discuss this, as well as some of our favorites that both do and do not stand the test of time.

Stay after the normal episode as discuss The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and the series as a whole, now that it has wrapped up.

Our topic this week revolves around dead or tired film franchises. Creed is hitting theaters, and it takes the son of a major character, as well as Rocky himself, and reinvigorates a franchise. If we could reinvent one, using any secondary or unseen character we wanted, how would we do it?

Stay after the normal episode as we take a moment to give our thanks.

With Spectre hitting theaters, we decided to take a look at James Bond and other spy films. Why do we love these movies about government superheroes so much? Is it the charm? Is it the gadgets? The license to do whatever you want whenever you want? We discuss this, as well as determine who our favorite all-time spies are. We tackle our listener questions this week as we hit a trifecta of topics!

First up - What books do we still wish would desperately be turned into films? Every book you can imagine has been adapted, yet there are always a few we're still waiting on.

Next up - Comedy pairings. There are so many pairings in film and television, actors grouped together in order to make us laugh hysterically...in theory. So, who are the BEST comedy pairings? We tackle this enormous topic, and also offer our picks for the worst comedy teams.

Lastly - Origin stories. They're everywhere. Not only are they everywhere, they're happening for characters whose origins we already know full and well. What is the obsession with origin stories in Hollywood? Does every character need his motivations explained?

Of course we have news, reviews, and even more – So join in on our conversation and listen to the latest episode of The Hollywood Outsider!

For this episode of The Hollywood Outsider Movie Podcast, we discuss two completely different listener topics:

First up – What are some of our favorite badly translated movie titles? When American films travel abroad, they are often retitled, and sometimes those titles are just a wee bit different than you would think. We discuss some of the most hysterical that we’ve found.

Next up is digital vs. physical media. Many people feel very strongly about this topic, one way or the other. There are those who prefer to build a Blu-ray or DVD collection of enormous proportions, while there are others who prefer to have everything via iTunes or Flixster. We discuss the pros and cons of this debate, as well as some of our listener’s thoughts.

John Depew is unlike many filmmakers, as he was already an accomplished businessman when he decided to finally follow his dream and become an actor. After years of successful and award-winning work – including 2 EMACT awards for his theater work – John decided to go all-in and open his own production company, Wild Beagle Productions, as well he began directing his own films.

With Lazarus Rising, John Depew throws his talents behind an action-thriller revolving around a team of assassins. Listen as Aaron sits down with John for an exclusive interview to discuss Lazarus Rising, what it takes to make an independent film, how he manages to round up quality actors on a smaller budget, and much more.

The time has come! Our 4th Annual Summer Movie HO Awards have arrived! Where did the summer end up for us overall, as well as versus last year? What was lacking? What did we learn? After we ponder these topics, it’s time for the awards!

Now, you know we cannot do our awards like everyone else, that’s just not how we do things. So get ready for what REALLY mattered this summer: Most memorable scene, best action scene, best thrill, The Darwin Award for most idiotic character, biggest badass, best movie line, and much more. All of those categories are then capped off by our picks for Most Disappointing, Worst, and (finally) our Top 3 movies of the summer. We conclude the awards by listing our compiled listener picks for the top 3 films of the summer.

This is one of our favorite episodes to record of the year, and this time is no different. (Be sure to read Aaron’s article on the Top 7 things he learned this summer) After the fun, be sure to stay after the credits to hear our team’s sentimental goodbye to horror legend, Wes Craven.
