ICE follows Maddison Bullock's Bailey Grantham as her father allows a Russian coach to house her with a much wealthier skating partner in Peyton Shaw (Lisa Mihelich). The two women grow up together and become sisters of a sort, and are then forced into the world of competitive ice skating as they lunge towards a limited spot qualifying for the US Olympic team. Of course, there is a major obstacle along the way, which threatens to tear the two competitors and friends apart.

For this exclusive interview, Maddison Bullock drops by to discuss her passion project, the obstacles to getting ICE made, and what it means to be a skater for your entire life.

ICE releases exclusively via Amazon VOD on March 17, 2018. Now, listen to our interview with the writer and star of ICE, Maddison Bullock.

The Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF) takes place annually in the city of Beloit, Wisconsin. Running for 10 days, typically at the end of Feb or the beginning of March, the festival plays 100+ films from over 25 different countries ranging from narrative features, to documentaries, to shorts, and even features a showdown between Illinois and Wisconsin filmmakers.

The films screen in a variety of local venues, so not only is a festival where a vast assortment of films can be found, but it also supports the local economy and involves residents as volunteers as well. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we turn a spotlight to BIFF and our thoughts on the festival, as well as reviews for over 20 films we screened there.

Also on this week’s show, we discuss Oscars 2018. Thoughts on the show, Jimmy Kimmel as return host, the winners, and we also reveal the winner of our own annual Oscar contest. It’s a packed episode with many great film recommendations that you won’t want to miss!

For our first Movie Battle Royale of 2018, we decided to climb aboard the Oscar train and look at some of the Best Picture winners of decades past. If you took a single decade, and looked at all 10 winners, which film would stand the test of time to be crowned the greatest film of that respective decade?

So, this week, we’re discussion the Best Picture winners of the 1990s. A decade ripe with classics, but only 10 verified winners of The Academy Award’s top prize. Amanda Sink from SMIRK joins us to debate and decide on which one film rises above the others to win the title! Will it be Dances with Wolves, Silence of the Lambs, Unforgiven, Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump, Braveheart, The English Patient, Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, or American Beauty? You’re about to find out.

Also this week: fans can now have a Friday the 13th vacation, The Dark Tower and Blair Witch head to TV, another round of You Just Don’t Get It, and spoiler-free reviews of Mute, Game Night, and Annihilation.

The Lodgers takes place in Ireland in the early 1900s. A family curse holds orphaned twins Rachel (Charlotte Vega) and Edward (Bill Milner) hostage, sectioned off from the outside world as punishment for the mistakes of their long-deceased kin. The rules are simple: be in bed by midnight, allow no one past the gates, and if either of them attempts to escape, the other will be met with a vengeful retribution. There are spirits both within and surrounding the walls of their estate to ensure these rules are enforced at all times. When Rachel’s fate intertwines with Sean (Eugene Simon), a local war hero, she begins to believe it might just prove feasible to risk it all.

While Rachel and Edward’s plight is similarly horrific, they vary on the appropriate way to address it. Edward clings to his life, no matter how pointless it might seem, as Rachel grows stronger every day in the belief that it is a richer existence to taunt the prospect of death than to live solemnly on the outskirts of life. Vega’s performance perfectly captures a tortured soul on the cusp of maturity, dangerously on the precipice of rebellion. Milner’s character is much more desperate, losing his grasp on reality as he clings to his pitiful life of solitude and despair. Simon’s Sean spends most of his screen time both enraptured with Rachel, while bewildered at her conundrum.

Having the entirety of The Lodgers engulfed within a gothic atmosphere – bleak color aesthetic, tragic circumstances, ominous fog – affords director Brian O’Malley the opportunity to compliment his sleek visuals with meticulous audio cues that accent the dread carried within every frame. The film also bears the distinction of being partially filmed at Loftus Hall, an infamous “haunted house” in Ireland, whose natural look evokes feelings of paranoia both on screen and off.

For our exclusive interview, director Brian O’Malley discusses the complexities and inner workings of filming The Lodgers. He explains how writer David Turpin came to take part in scoring the film, deciding that Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner completed his fateful pair, and what it was like filming within the walls of a bona fide haunted house.

Take a listen to the interview below, and be sure to catch The Lodgers in select theaters and on VOD beginning February 23, 2018.

Every so often, media and internet clickers come along to determine a movie coming out is “important”. Occasionally it’s very true, and other times it’s just an opinion or hype. With Black Panther now in theaters, and the general consensus seeming to be that it is an important film for many, it felt a good time to ask a simple question: When IS a movie important? Both to society, and to us personally.

Also this week: Television officially heads to VR via Robert Rodriguez and Darren Aronofsky, Fangoria magazine is reborn, another round of Movie Innuendo, and a spoiler-free review of new VOD thriller, The Lodgers.

For the second half of our show, we dive deep into the world of Wakanda! Marvel’s Black Panther has taken over cinemas across the globe, and it is time to decipher just what it all means. Is this the film many touted it to be? Or just another overhyped superhero flick? Find out as we discuss every aspect of this juggernaut of a film.

It’s February. The month of love and heartache. And we’re a podcast focused on entertainment. Put those together and what do you get? An episode focused on the most emotional relationships in television, of course!

We discuss some of those relationships in TV that either broke or healed our aching hearts. Perhaps they filled our cups with joy, or maybe their angst flowed over into our own realities. It’s an intriguing conversation and there is no better time to discuss it.

Also this week: Star Wars gets another trilogy, Deadpool once again leads the charge in marketing strategy, reviews of Entanglement, The Ritual, and 15:17 to Paris, and much more.

An adventure almost 7 years in the making, THIS is the 300th episode of The Hollywood Outsider Podcast!

Also, we each pay tribute to all of the hosts of The HO, from the original run up until now, complete with scattered compilation clips from the best episodes throughout the years.

Last year, we debated on how, if we were to drop ourselves into a movie, we could defeat an iconic movie villain. It was a difficult task, though with a little creativity and a box of flies, we were able to fend off evil fairly successfully.

This year, we wanted to turn the tables. The villains rarely win, which means heroes are far more difficult to bring down. Therefore, on this episode we put ourselves firmly in the shoes of supervillains and megalomaniacs everywhere and determine exactly how we would bring down iconic movie heroes such as Iron Man, Batman, Harry Potter, James Bond, and even Luke Skywalker!

That’s not nearly everything. We also have a report from RRStar.com reporter Adam Poulisse on Sundance and films Hereditary, Minding the Gap, and Piercing; discussion on Oscar snubs, Netflix’s goal to change the industry, MoviePass’ latest move, and Breaking Bad’s anniversary; as well as reviews of Open House and Hostiles.
